Is my D80 dying?

Yes
A few weeks back my D80 LCD screen failed on saving an image - there were vertical coloured lines on it and camera appeared unresponsive although the top panel was working. Battery light was blinking yet full. Changed memory card and battery, but this didnt help. Eventually it cleared itself.
Recently, even when only saving in JPG occasionally the green card activity stayed on for ages when a picture was taken. The only way out was to switch the camera off and on (obviously not saving the image). Changed to a different formatted carsd again.
Yesterday went for a walk - took 2 pics on continuous mode - solid green activity light again. Switched off and on again - took one more and more LCD vertical lines appeared. Switched off - formatted card - and seemd ok for a while. Then throughout the day kept failing either with solid light or "CHA" message.

So does anyone have any ideas whats going on - or indeed how to correct it. It is out of warranty - and my concern is that the repair cost may be more than its worth!

Many thanks

You've tried all the usual stuff? Cleaning the contacts; refreshing the batteries; full factory re-set through the menu?

How old is it?

Its about 2 years old.
Tried brand new batteries, both with and without grip, have updated the firmware to the latest one because that seemed to imply it was released for a "blinking power issue", tried the 2 button reset and also the hidden reset switch in the AV connections flap. Haven't tried new memory cards but have switched between the 3 that i have, and will also look for a full factory reset in the menus tonight.

Given that you have 'screen problems' it might be a general electrical fault that will require a dealer-service by Nikon... Should be less than £80 if it doesn't actually require any new parts...

Many thanks, guess i'll be contacting Nikon. Hope they have a swift turn-around.

Well it was sent off to Nikon Service Dept - and just got the estimate back at just over £300 for the repair.

Is it worth it or do I put the money towards a newer camera body?

Decisions - decisions.....

No its not worth the repair, just put the money towards a newer one.

£300 to repair a £300 camera....:thinking::thinking:

Why not stick it on Ebay for "spares or repair", it'll probably do something daft like £150-200 and put that and the repair money towards a shiny, new D90?

Or a much better Canon 50D. :naughty:

Thanks for the prompt responses which really confirm my own thoughts.
Pity it had to die now - if it had been another year later i would have probably looked at the D300s rather than a D90 (which if rumours are true is up for replacement soon).
