Hi All

Last week i had a new Mac book pro 13, love it to bits but im a bit worried about the battery on it. When i had it new, Coconut battery and Istat both said that it was on 98% of its life.

The original battery capacity was 5450mah, and it reported to be at 5340 with two cycles... not too bad, but after another cycle it reported 5215 a massive decrease down to 95%, and now its still hovering around 5216.

I am a bit worried as this is the second mac i have had in a week, first one was faulty and now this second one is playing about...

I am currently on the phone to apple support becuase i have just done their calibration but it has done nothing but make the battery worse... HELP!

Right so with only 2 cycles you are worried about its life?
The battery probably hasnt had a chance to prime properly yet and I doubt that Apple would see it as a dud battery after so little use.

Battery testing software are renowned for being inaccurate at the best of times so I would give it a few weeks and see how the realtime use of the battery is then contact Apple if you are not happy.

Never had a mac laptop before... im a PC at heart!

PC or MAC it doesnt make a difference when it comes to batteries. I think you are worrying a little too much about something that is so new.
Even on a PC the software that you can use to test a battery can sometimes make you wonder but if you ignore all that stuff and just physically use the battery and test it that way then you will see if it is a dud or not.

My MB Pro is 13" and I can get about 4 hours using it for browsing etc which is more than enough for me.

Yes, do not worry at all. Just make a note of what is happening and if it has not levelled out and remained reasonably constant after about a month then go to the Apple shop with the information you have. They are extremely helpful in most cases and will sort it. Remember that other things affect the limit such as temperature etc so you may find that your total power goes slightly up and down.

yeah just paranoid a bit, however i am impressed with the laptop, turned in on 10am the other day, half hour off for lunch, 10 min walk home and it was still going at 9pm in the night.

My mac book pro (the 17" hi res 2.5GHz model) is now 15 months old, the battery health goes from 89% to 95% according to iStat pro but it is currently on 586 cycles!! The reality is that I get 2-3 hours out of it and always have had. Just make sure you look at my tip about getting a cheap foreign ebay Applecare voucher and stick that on it before it is 12 months old :) You should get years out of it then. I can't see me upgrading mine for quite a while, the 17" unibody ones are nicer but they are not much quicker. I'll probably last out for the next incarnation so will probably end up buying another battery at some point!

Mine is showing 5624 mAh at the moment :)

Remove the battery testing utilities and you'll have no worries ;)
Sounds like perfect advice, I've never had any battery issues with my Mac, mind you I've never had a battery testing utility attached to it either... :D

Should I....

My 13" macbook still holds 4896 mAh after 522 charges (good for about 3 hours) so you should be ok! ;)

Battery's don't last for ever, look at getting a 3rd party battery allot cheaper than apples, i have had no problems with them.

They should last more than the 2 cycles that the OP is saying though...

FWIW, it's a new battery, if things don't settle down after 10 days I'd be looking at speaking to a genius at Apple.

I know a lot say you dont need to do it with these memoryless batteries but I still find it pays to run the battery down to the reserve power for the first 5-6 times then charge. I know my Macbook battery condidtion is better after 6 months than my mate who bought his the same time and didnt do the above.

I got told once that it is good to run a laptop battery down till it runs out and then leave it for 10 hours+, then charge it fully up this is called something but I can't remember....

I found after years of using batteries. If it is constantly plugged into a supply, take the battery out. I just buggers it up.

This does not happen with Apple kit and it is not even possible with any new kit because they have built in batteries. The "remove the battery" tip is a remnant of poorly designed charge circuits of yesteryear. You regularly see charge cycles of four figures on Apple kit. Mine is at 590 with 90%+ charge capacity.
