Is my nifty 50 sticky?

No
I've just bought my first prime - a Minolta 50mm F1.7 for my Sony A200 and wondered if it was faulty, or the following is normal.

If I set the camera to 'P' in darkly lit room, it sets the aperture to F2. I can then use the wheel to move it down to F1.7 and it generally works, but sometime the 1.7 flashes to indicate its out of range. Is this normal? Why doesn't it default to the maximum aperature - could the iris be sticking?

If I take the lens off and move the slider the aperture seems OK, but I'm not expert enough to know if its 100%.

Any advice on how to check if all is well?

thanks

BUMP please- I need to know if I have to return it as faulty.

If it's the same as for canon, it's flashing to say it'll still underexpose (i.e. the aperture isn't big enough for what it thinks is the correct exposure).

Thanks,

But why does it select F2 and not F1.7 when the light is low? I thought it should always use the max aperature, as my other lenses do.

I can use the wheel to move it to 1.7, and it doesn't always blink - so I'm confused.

But it isn't flashing when it chooses F2, which I would expect if it is going to flash at 1.7

Have you tried looking at the manual?

Yes, thanks. I understand what the flashing means, but didn't see why it didit at F1.7, but not F2.

After more experimenting, it looks like at 1.7 it underexposes by about 2/3 stop. What could cause this?
