No
I've bought a 77mm Nikon NC UK filter from ebay to use with my eagerly awaited 24-70. Main purpose of it is for protection rather than any filtering.
Anyone know of any tell tale signs of whether it's the real deal or a fake?

Font looks fine and says on the rim "Nikon NC 77mm JAPAN"
Do you suspect its a fake?
I have a genuine Nikon filter that says just like yours on the side, no part number or anything else. Look at the printing with a magnifying glass, the print edges will be nice and sharp if its the real deal. It wont rub off either....

Crap filters also look like mirrors in the light. On proper ones the reflections are a lot more faint, and if you look through it the glass should be so clear it looks like there is no glass. When I got my Hoya HD 77mm UV filter, I thought there was no glass in it, so much so that I tapped it with my finger. With cheap UV filters from Jessops own brand etc. you can tell straightaway there is glass in it.

Well everything looks as it should. Its because it was just under £30 which I think is quite cheap, so just making sure I've not been had lol

I imagine that a fake filter would not be coated, as that's expensive. It's coated if the reflections of bright lights off the surface are tinted, usually blue or green. But if the reflection is neutral, it's not coated.

Is there a barcode label on the box?

Mine has these barcodes: UPC 0-1820802482-7 / JAPAN 4-960759018564

I paid £29.99 - maybe we both bought them from the same place.

It would maybe interesting to set up a gallery of fake and genuine filters, there's a lot about (fake ones)

How do we know if they're fakes though? The OP and I have the same filter (Nikon 77m NC), probably from the same supplier - but I'm not 100% sure they're fakes yet.

Allan and Punjabi Geezer: did your Nikon filters come with a printed user's manual?

My £29.99 NC 77mm came in packaging exactly like this - http://www.thaidphoto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144026 - but there was was no printed manual.

The outer box has the barcodes mentioned above and the filter case itself has Nikon CP-15 77mm moulded onto the hinged lid.

The words Nikon NC 77mm JAPAN on the rim of the filter are printed in white and have quite a sheen (i.e. they're not matte white).

If it's a fake filter, it's a darned good copy. Having said that, I just looked at the supplier's ratings and there are some buyers who reckon they've been sold fakes. One says he has a fake NC in a genuine Nikon box.

I wasn't meaning specifically Nikon ones as they are less likely to be faked, most likely are always going to be Hoya I think.

Everything seems in order but also no printed manual
here's the link of mine http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330399859861&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I'm not sure about the printed manuals (some websites show them included, some don't) - but your seller is the same as mine, just using a different name.

Here's mine http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UK-NEW-Nikon-...350208&cguid=841ee2c41290a0e203c22702fed3190a. (Price is £31.99 now but he was charging £29.99 in January). Have a look at the negative feedback 19 Aug re NC 52mm.
