For the past few months sometimes the forum or other forums would stop working for a few minutes. Then it would work again, if I start a new page, BBC site would work, but OCUK would just go to "page cannot be displayed". A few mins later it will work or if i reset the router it will work again. so i am guessing its the router that's faulty, sometimes i leave my PC on overnight downloading, and wake up and check my email on the iphone but it won't work until i reset the router.

Also, my xbox live keep getting disconnected too.

I have a 3com 3CRWDR100A-72, had it 5/6 years now, may be its dying?

If so, what would you recommend? Looking at the Linksys WAG160N.

The 1st test would be to borrow another router from someone and use it for few days (more than 3 .. good reason for this). If it works OK, then it's your router that needs replacing.

If your internet keeps disconnecting while using the "new" router then it could be your phone line. IS your router connected directly into the master socket or into an extension? The master socket is best for a clean connection.

Mine is connected into my master socket. I recently bought a BT I-plate BT I-Plate, and this has really helped stablise my line and boost my speed.

If your disconnectes keep happening with a "new" router, then contact your ISP and ask them to refer the matter to BT Wholesale, who manage all the BT broadband lines.

Good luck.

I agree.

borrowing another routeris the easy way to check - or swap with a mate and if he starts getting the same problems then you know its a router issue.

Lots of possible reasons for the symptoms you are getting. Check your router logs and check thinkbroadband for your ISP and see if others are showing similar issues.

I have seen problems like this when someone close by has suddenly started to use a wireless device on the same channel as your router. The problems are intermitent as it depends on when their equipment is turned on etc.

Just change the channel you are using in your routers config...your pc should detect it automatically.

Its something quick and easy to eliminate at least :-)

Could also be PC based, do you have another PC/laptop on the same connection that is ok? You may have spyware/malware on your machine

this is similar to my problem and the above fixed it no problem

Who is your ISP.

I remember having a similar problem, it used to go belly up during big downloads, it'd be fine for an hour and then just drop out usually half way through, a power reset on the router fixed it, until next time..
At first I thought it might be ISP traffic management so I downloaded a traffic counter app which suggested I wasn't reaching any caps.
Couple of phone calls to my ISP which is Telewest/NTL/Virgin, swapped a few values in the MODEM firmware, and everything 's been ok since.
I dunno why re-setting the router made any difference, but it was the modem.

I am with UKfsn, I do have another router...somewhere.

Funny that i have a NEW Linksys one sitting here for a friend's christmas present. I have changed the DNS last night and it seem better and i thought it had fixed it until just now. ocuk just timed out for 5 mins.

Its okay now, just started working again, no need to close browser or anything.

Router is about 2m from a cordless phone base.

also try updating the firmware. latest will be on linksys site.

my sky router is doing similar things..
