Is my site doing it's job?

The top menu is not obviously a menu as there is no rollover.

Try putting this in your css lines at the top on each page.

Code:
area:hover {color #red; }

From a purely technical point of view - CSS should be kept in a seperate stylesheet file that is callled on each page and then you can make site wide style changes such as the one I described by only editing one file and not every page.

I find white text on black make me eyes feel a bit odd as when I go to another site or look away I can still see the lines of text till my eyes adjust.

I normally avoid staying on sites with these colours only, but if it's a really good site I will use the "nosquint" add on to reset the colours for that site.

Not sure if hover will work on 'area' now I come to think of it.

For navigation like that I'd normally use lists. Its quite easy and likely more seo/browser standards friendly. If you want me to quickly post the code here to do it I don't mind.

Hope this isn't too harsh:

I agree re White on Black. It's a bit squinty to read.
I'm also in agreement about what I thought were strange titles but are, in fact, the menu system.
The grammar throughout the site could do with looking at. As an example, "West Yorkshire Photography: Weddings, Events ,Black tie balls and Proms" could read "West Yorkshire Photography: Weddings, Events, Black Tie, Balls and Proms" for example (though the word "Balls" just doesn't look right:)). I'm a stickler for grammar though, but as a potential customer, I'd be put off by Bad England.

Not meant to offend, just constructive criticism!

Not a new site so a review probably not best title! ;)

However from a customer point of view does it work? Layout, etc. I often feel colour being black could be an issue.

Nope!

It wasn't until I saw other posts that I realised there were links on the home page....kind of subtle that! Maybe put some hyperlinks on the images that relate to the themes that you cover...far too subtle for me from a quick look I'm afraid :-(

Strange comment, when you see a website with Home About etc. at top of page you dont think its a menu?! Bizarre.

Well since I am clearly not the only one to think this surely you should accept my ineptituse at realising your intentions and perhaps be a tad more explicit after all you surely DO want punters to navigate your site why else would you be asking for feedback??

Bizarre as you take this, were I to navigate to this site I would click off pretty sharpish.

If you think it is cool as it is you don't need any input from me. Just trying to help as it happens.

immediate thoughts on the front page - black backgrounds are bad, awful event images are cheap.

I don't like looking at the wedding prices withoug an image there to remind me why I'm paying for you.

You have 30 relatively weak images in your gallery (bad title needs changing) try having 10-15 strong ones, also think about the order that they are in. Not a massive fan of simpleviewer here but its not terrible.

contact form is on the left while the whole rest of the site is centre aligned

you also only seem to be able to get to the wedding pricelist from the about me page

ditch the events work off to another site then change the styling, redo the port and sort out ordering and roberts your mothers brother :D

Ill take all points on board but you get to prices from weddings link on home page how did you miss that?
"Ditch events to another site"? "awful event images" I'm all for constructive criticism but you have events alongside weddings on your site and the images aren't that impressive either! Stones and glass houses? ;)

That looks much better on a white background now. I'm happy to share the code for you to a nice menu if you like? You'll just have to copy and paste it in.
