Is my Yongnuo YN 560 III faulty?

Hi I recived delivery of my first speedlite Yongnuo YN 560 III and I'm very impressed by it but for some reason feom time to time when I try to switch it on ir makes a winding noise but it doesn't come to life and the pilot light keeps flashing green and after several tries it decides to wake up, this is with brand new alkaline batteries. Not sure if it's the speedlite or the cheap ikea batteries. Should I try a more expensive brand? Although once the flash is up and running it has no trouble recycling at all, 2sec from full power and no delay from 1/4 power.

That winding noise is the servo moving for the flash lens. Ikea batteries won't last long at all, Duracell aren't too bad but you'll find it much easier to get some rechargeable batteries as these last longer and you have the added benefit that you won't incur more expense down the line! It's taking longer than normal as you have a low voltage from the batteries, it will prime the capacitor to full and that's why you get quite a few bursts on 1/4 power

My point is why isn't it coming on as I keep the on/off button pressed? and it takes several tries to get it going. Just did a Google search and to my surprise the ikea batteries came out on top of all of the other batteries. I just bought some duracell ultra to test. But the ikea ones have a 2269 mah and duracell ultra 2130 mah. It says on the manual do not use rechargeable batteries only alkaline or something else lol

Only Alk batteries? That's a bit of a strange one, I bet it's due to the recommendations due to recycle times etc, but as you've stated regarding the power on process, I would send it back, you normally hold it on for 3 seconds until it turns on fully

The bizarre thing is now I'm using Duracell ultra plus it's working a treat with no issues what so ever... so far however I'll give it till tomorrow and if it starts playing up again off it goes back to amazon. Thanks for the input.

When I first got one of these I had a weird issue.

When trying to turn it on it the icons would go across the screen like they do but nothing would happen. Then I tried some different batters, they didnt work, so I tried another set and it started working.

Then after that it was working with the other previous batteries and hasnt failed since so I have no idea what was going on there.

Lol pretty much the same thing here. I was talking to a sparky (electrician) at work about batteries and he said he bought some energiser for his digital camera and the camera wouldn't even turn on although they're fine in his flash light, he thinks the best ones he uses are duracell. We'll see. I heard good things about the eneloop ones.

Bought a set of black XX with charger MQR06 and another set in a clear box. £60 in all...
Still haven't been able to drain first set of batteries

I'm certain, your initial problems were caused by unsuitable batteries. But please report back, if you find out more!

Ok just found the warning bit of paper and it's my fault as it says nothing about rechargeable batteries oops! It says not compatible with LiFePO4 and Li-ion batteries.

Ok it appears to be the ikea batteries I was using didn't have enough grunt to initialy charge up the capacitor, I ordered some 2000mah eneloop bettaries last night from Amazon will report back oncw recived.
