Is Nikon D200 still worth buying?

I'm shooting on a D7k as my main camera. Ideally i would like a D700 in the future but cannot afford to buy one atm.

I've seen a D200 + Battery Grip for sell in a local shop for £370 with 22k clicks on.

I need a second body to work with since I'm start getting some request on doing more jobs and i feel i need a back up. Ideally i could buy a D300 for £600 but then i have to buy accessories etc then it could add up the cost.

What you guys think?
 
I shoot a d300 with the a d200 as back up, as long as you don't want high iso the d200 is still a great camera, if you want hi iso performance look elsewhere. looks like the d7k uses different batteries to the d200, so will be different to the d300 aswell.

what accessories would you need different for the d300 to the d200? as these will be the same for both, wouldn't they?
 
i don't mean to use my D7k accessories on the D200.

I tend to keep accessories generic as possible i.e batteries and grip.

If i spend £600 on a D300 then buy a battery grip for the D300 it will cost me another £150-200 which means i end up spending £800.

I believe the D200 battery grip is different then the D300? I could get a D200 with grip for around £370 so that could leave me to spend the money else where instead.

High ISO don't bother me since the D200 can shoot up to 1600 if i end up using it. I could always shoot up to 6400 on my D7000.

I think D200 as a backup camera is a good buy.

as for the d300 grip look at the third party ones, £50 from what I understand.
 
you maybe right about that. I don't get paid till next week so couple of days ti think about which one i want to buy.

Excellent choice, D200 is a lovely camera, you won't regret buying it. :clap:

To behonest the camera I going to buy is a backup, i probably end up buying a D700 next xmas.

It just happen i need a backup to my D7000 if anything happen to it.

I mainly shoot with fast zoom and primes.

Most likely I won't shoot with 1600 on the D200, probably 1000 max. I use flash so not a probably and if the camera is good i might use it out door to do landscape etc :)

I can't go wrong with £370 i guess.

My brain tells me i should by a D300 or D300s but my heart tells me D200 is the way to go.

In reality the D7000 is my main camera and the backup camera will hardly ever use.
 
Id say 800 max on the D200, below that its gorgeous, but its really not a high ISO camera. I used to shoot one at 1600 all the time for live gigs and needed some serious NR afterwards.

Great to use, built like a rock.
If I ever lost everything and only had a tiny amount to spend on a camera, it would be a D200.
 
thanks Tom, thats good info to know. I think i will definate get the D200 as a backup.

Small amount of money now for hte D200 but its something i can trust to take around as backup.
 
I've went to the shop to try out the D200 with grip with my 28-70 lens.

First impression was the camera is very robust, good weight and big which I like.

Haven't really tested the performance but everything felt good.

Which got me thinking *** a used D300 or D300s.

But does it worth paying almost twice the cost of the d200 with grip for something I might not get to use often?

Like I said D7000 is my main camera because the good low light ISO performance. I use single point focus alot and don't shoot high speed so 8fps and 51 AF point on the D300 is not really needed for me.

Like i said this is a backup body I looking for and I planning to buy D700 next year
 
perfect thread for me as i'm in the exact same position, the D200 is the solution i had found myself at too, i'm glad everyone has said the same :thumbs: i'd be using it for portraits with plenty of lighting so no need for high ISOs :)
 
If you don`t need high ISO, then the D200 is a very capable camera.

Quite why they sell for so little is a bit baffling TBH.

Not a problem Andy. No way I would sell mine for what they are currently going for on here and other sales outlets.

Get one cheap whilst you can..........:thumbs:
 
Almost all of the work on my websites was done with d200 bodies. Absolute solid performer.
Yes it has been superseded but really you can do seriously good work. I've had exhibitions up to wall size all done with the d200.
 
I think you all sold me to commit to grab one as a second body. The guy in the shop said the D200 will go well with my Nikon 28-70 f2.8 which i agree.

After playing around with the D200 with grip then i hold my d7000 with grip after, it felt my d7k is really small lol, but D7k give me good performance tho. The D200 will give me a good solid backup and can probably use it to do some studio work as well.

The guy in the shop offer me £340 for the D200 with Battery Grip (all box with accessories) but the camera done 27k clicks. or i can buy the D200 body as where for £370 (8k clicks) then buy the grip second hand for £70.

What do you guys think?
 
you probably right about that. My ultimate plan for end of this year or early next year is to move to fullframe but right now i need a backup body. I guess the D200 is a good buy.

I going to grab one this week :)

D200 is a terrible camera, but, as a favour, I would be prepared to pay someone a reasonable price so they don't lose too much money on it in the future........... :naughty:

When i had my D100, is regularly shot at ISO1000 and there was barely any noise....

is 27k clicks too much for a D200? or paid £100 more for a 8k click with grip?

The shop offer me £340 for the D200 with grip (27k clicks)

27k is barely run in, wouldn't concern me at all as long as the body was cosmetically in good condition.
 
i've try the camera in the shop, everything seem working fine and not much problem. It comes with 6 month warranty as well.

I think the shop try to get rid of it thats why they reduce the price abit to attract me.

The camera is all box etc, i just wondering does it worth spending that extra £100 for a low mileage as a backup.
 
MPBphotographic seem to have a glut of D200's at the moment, ranging from about £320 to £380. I would be happy buying one at under 50k clicks, thats about a third of its shutter life. I don't think you would wear one out at that mileage especially as a backup camera.

I've had two, one was under 10k clicks, the other over 30k, both worked flawlessly and, stupidly, I sold them.

I have another on the way though... ;)

Mine is 38k and hasn't given me any trouble really. I've been cursing the ISO performance as I just cant get decent wildlfe shots without good sunshine, but that maybe as much to do with the budget lens I use
 
in that case i probably ring the shop next week to reserve that one for me. It would save me paying postage etc and £340 with the grip and all accessories is decent. I maybe able to get the shop to slap a free CF as well lol.

Most likely the D200 will be use as backup to my D7000 when doing wedding etc. I may try the D200 in studio when lighting is not a problem.

I use fast zoom and primes so i guessing the D200 will work nicely. I don't shoot over 1000 iso too often on my D7000 but if i do need ISO bumping i can always use my D7000

what sort of CF does the D200 support?

Does the Sandisk ultra 8GB will work? Because i seen them on amazon for like £20 and fair price to paid actually.
 
Just picked up a gripped d200 off fleabay for £286 with 21k clicks...very happy with it. Got it to replace a d5000. Much bigger than the 5k but soooo much better built. Just feels right. Couldn't afford the d300/s and wont miss the video off the 5k...can't believe how mu h camera you get for so little money with the d200!
It will take the Sandisk cards no problem....I use a couple of 4gb ones with no issues.
 
i planning to buy one in the next two days as a second body. But i sense the camera will be use more during day time and good light condition then my D7000.

I got fast zoom and bunch of primes so hopefully it will work well :)

.....and it came today.
I paid under £230 for it, but it did come without a box or charger, thankfully, it had a fully charged battery.
It looks immaculate and has a new looking strap and unmarked rear screen protector.
Hardly surprising, I just checked the shutter count....1238 clicks.

Should last me a while....:woot:

Paid day tomorrow for me so i should order one tomorrow night :)

I got a feeling already the D200 will be my working camera most of the time either in studio or day out. The D7000 will still have its place because of the crazy ISO. I could start thinking how i going to use both camera with my wide range lenses.
 
Hello all.

Just been reading through this thread and i get the feeling that the D200 is not good above ISO 800.

Would this camera then not be a good choice to shoot in darker areas such as gigs where flash is not to be used?

It won't be ideal, but it depends on your lenses and their speed. I used to shoot with a Sony a200 (same sensor as the D200) with a 55/1.4 @ ISO 800 and ISO 1600 indoors at the odd gig. Results were grainy but it depends what you are looking for. If it's small web sized images then no prob.

i'm bidded the D300 instead for cheap. So i'm good with D300 since usuable ISO is up to 3200
