No
Just reading outdoor photography (magazine) tips and it says with IS off the AF may lock on faster? Does anyone know this to be true? I think I will try anyway as a lot of my bird in flight shots are OOF.

They also mention in the same tip that IS can be off at faster shutter speeds with no loss in IQ and I know this is a subject which I know is under much discussion! (hence I'm asking the question)

Yup, it's absolutely spot on. There are plenty of threads discussing this in the Sports section.

Surely you want IS off for BIFs anyway? Otherwise the lens will try to stay still as you follow the bird.

Depends on the lens, for me no, it's about knowing how to use your gear for the best results.
