Hi All - I'm currently looking into buying a Canon 70-200mm F2.8 lens but there seems to be a big difference in price between the IS and non IS versions. I have been offered a non IS for £600 but am unsure whether to pay the extra for the IS as I haven't got the steadiest of hands (although seem to be getting better with practice).
I intend to use this for motorsport and candid shots. Any advise would be welcomed.

Non IS all day long for me ... i've got one and it's superb, considerably sharper than any IS i've used. Pin sharp wide open, all the way through. If you haven't got the steadiest of hands (like me) then a £30 monopod will do just as good a job as IS

I have a bit of a hankering to upgrade my 70-200 f4 to one of the f2.8 versions, having thought long and hard about it I've decided that when I do buy one it will be the IS version. The f2.8 is a big lens and the IS will be a real help in low light, that said if I got offered a decent nick non-IS f2.8 for good money (£600 sounds like a good deal to me) I'd probably buy it!

The question to get your answer is whether you're going to shoot anything that is stationary (or v.slow moving) with a shutter speed that you wont be able to get over 1/200th.

I got the non-IS version as I know I'm able to bump my ISO up on my 1D's to get the shutter speed I wanted, and also most of the stuff I shoot is moving fasst anyway so IS wouldn't make a difference.

Got mine from Martin's a few weeks back, and he could only get 2 in because that's all that was left ... and that was the last batch he was taking stock of ... Jessops etc simply can't get stock of them anymore.

It's looking like the 2.8 IS may be a bit out of my budget for a while, so would I be best with the f4 IS at about £400 or pushing a bit for the non IS f2.8?

F4 IS at £400 would be a brilliant deal – that seems to be about the price the normal F4 goes at, and I haven’t seen an F4 IS second hand anyway either on here or at the usual shops.

70-200mm F4 IS
New price from Kerso - £859.00 + £10.00 + 1.5 % (paypal) OR
Ebay - £799.00 described as new buy-it-now price which I can collect from a shop fairly local.

What would you do?

Do a bank transfer with Kerso and save the 1.5%
He has more stock arriving next week (I emailed him at the weekend about this lens).
£859 is a very good price plus you know for sure that it is brand new therefore, 1 year warranty.

Well I've pushed the button and found a 70-200mm F2.8 IS for £900 complete with box, UV filter, hood and caps. It was going to cost over £800 for a 2nd hand F4 so thought, sod it why not!

So watch out on here for a Sigma 150-500mm in the classifieds! Can't afford to keep both.
