hello all

ive got some money spare and was looking at getting a couple lenses

i would like a 50mm 1.8 for portraits of my kids ect, but i would also like a macro lens, now i was wandering do i go for the 50mm 1.8 which will leave me enough to buy a Nikon AF-S 40mm Micro f/2.8 DX G Lens

or do i just get the Nikon 60mm f2.8 AF Micro D but then i wont have enough for the nift, i can always save for it later.

my main concern is will i have to get to close to things with the 40mm micro which may scare them of, also will the 60 mm macro be any good for portraits if so i can get that and use it for both.

or would i be better of getting one of these Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP DI Macro 1:1

i guess ultimatly i would prefer a macro and get a portrait lens later

sorry about the long question guys but i want to make sure before i go spending

You could get the 105 macro and then you have a great macro lens with a good working distance and also a cracking portrait lens. The 60 would be good at portraits too, but the working distance to bugs and the like is very close.
 
unfortunatly the 105 is abit out of my price range

the most i could go to is the tamron 90mm macro
 
I think its a tough call, the 60 would be good for portraits but too close for bugs, and I personally feel the 100+ is too long for portraits. The 90 might be a good middle ground but I cant comment on the lens

would the 60mm macro lens be better than a 50mm 1.8 for portraits?
 
also any veiws on the Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP DI Macro 1:1 as to macro shots and portraits i guess

Given your options, I would go for the 60mm.
I find both 40 and 60 too close for most macro work, but the 60 should make a good portrait lens, too.

I bought my 50 1.4 about a year after the 105 2.8 and until then used the 105er for portraits, which I didn't find to be a problem, actually.

The 105 is a really amazing lens, but it is rather pricey unfortunately.

The Tamron 90 may be a good alternative, but I don't know anything about that lens unfortunately.
 
Optically the Tamron is great, but its not the best build quality.
The lens extends consderably during focusing and it has a silly clutch system to change of AF to MF.

All macro lenses will make great portrait lenses, and all are pretty much as sharp as each other, there isnt really a bad macro lens.
The differences come in working distance, build quality and wether or not the lens extends.

Ive never used the 40 or 60, but have owned the Tamron 90mm, the sigma 105mm, the Nikon 105mm VR and the canon 100mm IS.

The Canon wins hands down as the best, but obviously no good for this application.

The Nikon would be next, followed by the sigma and the tammy at the bottom.

The Sigma and Tammy are both excelent value for money, and for insect macro work, make much more sence than the shorter lengths.
 
blimey!!! never been so unsure lol

well ive just been told i can get the nifty from santa haha so i may just get the tamron, im going to have a look in the shops to see which i prefer though before i buy anything

The tamron is superb..but pretty slow to af.The nikon 60mm afs version is also fantastic optically but has pretty fast af too,great for kids on the move lol:lol:
I even used mine for some football shots recently.
 
I used to have the tamron 90 & i regret selling it.:gag:
