Is the 85mm 1.8 D a waste of money?

Hi all,

I just want to take portrait photos and I don't have a lot of money so I am sticking to primes. I have the 50mm 1.8 G and love it. I use it on a crop body, my D7000.
I am now looking into getting an 85mm 1.8 but I can't afford the G only the D version (yes, even second hand).
Is the D lacking in sharpness or is it just speed? What are the disadvantages and is it worth buying at all?
 
where did you get the idea the d version is slower ?

anyway i love my 1.8 d ,its certainly not lacking in sharpness
 
I have this lens too. I have read a few times that the G is slightly sharper, which I would expect as it is a newer lens, but the D is more than sharp enough for me and I can use it on film cameras too if I ever get a 35mm.
 
Thanks. Actually I think I will save for the G. I was also considering a 25-70 but this would make my 50mm a bit redundant. Makes more sense to get another prime. I don't mind changing lenses in a shoot, if needed.
 
I sold mine on as it used to frustrate the hell out of me, it just doesn't focus close enough for what I wanted. Does the G version focus closer?
 
Wondered how good screw focus is compared to afs?

Heard that there could be a bit of slack with screw.

Pointless having slightly oof pics!
 
The d version focuses very quickly no issues there.

Was wondering more about the accuracy of focus than speed with the D.

Was thinking of using one for portraits close up, wideish open with focus on eyes - can be tricky with a slow zoom on moving grand children!
