Is the barrel meant to extend on its own?

So a few months ago I bought a Sigma 28-70 F2.8 on Ebay for £123 (cheap I know). It was purchased by the seller in the US in 2005.

It works perfectly but unless lock the barrel with the clip button, it extends on its own if the camera is face down.

This is my first decent ish lens so have no comparison.
Basically if i put the lens on the camera, face it towards the floor and unlock it, the barrel extends slowly to 70mm on its own :razz:

Not the end of the world but a bit frustrating if im walking along and it keeps extending.....especially if it can be fixed easily?

Hi, yes thats normal with some zooms, which is why they are putting the lock on so when not in use it doesn't extend. The Canon 70-300 IS is the same, unlock it and it will creep out all on it's own. Don't worry about it, nothing wrong :thumbs:
 
Like Andy says, that's why the locking switch is there. If the lens had been designed so that it didn't extend by itself under gravity, there would be no need for the lock.
 
Yeah it is normal, that's what the lock is there for. I wish my sigma 170-500mm had a zoom lock, now that is a pain in the arse !
