Is the canon 17-55 f2.8 £250 better than the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 os

Since my canon 17-85 died, I won't a replacement. I have narrowed it down to the above lenses. I have ruled the Tamron out as I can't put up with the noisy motor.
I am not a pro photographer, but aim for quality images. The dilemma I have, is the canon worth the extra 250 quid over the Sigma.

I have the 17-55 and its a cracking lens, Cannot comment on the sigma but what I can say is if you have the money for the canon go for it, thats what I got told when looking to purchase the canon
 
Is it £250 better, that is down to the individual.

For me is was worth the extra money up from the Tamron 17-50mm, for that I got fast autofocus that worked properly in low light, and decent IS all in a very well built lens. I also cannot abide having lens externals that move when focussing, such as is the case on the sigma or tamron.
 
Looking at reviews the advanatge of the Canon over the Sigma and the Tamron is the extra 5mm, more reliable AF and sharper boarders at f2.8.
 
Could n't justify the extra for the canon, but the finance manager said that Xmas can come early. So now looking for the best deal.

I went for the sigma cause the difference wasn't width it and never let mr down. It is always on my cam. Save and buy a polariser for it. It is just a matter of opinion and usage.

Nothing to do with me but there is a nice Tamron 17-50f2.8 (quite a sweet lens) plus a Canon 17-55 for sale here on TP for very decent prices if you are happy to buy used ?

Might be acceptable to the Finance Manager ?

Definitely worth a look on your part at least !

Have just noticed a couple of these Tamrons have just sold in the last day or so which is weird. I reckon that for less than GBP200 they are tremendous bang-for-buck. That said, I would take the Canon 17-55 any day at any price. Fingers crossed that you get a deal off Andy ? Doubt you will be unhappy with this lens. I'm sure you have checked the reviews everywhere and you will not find a bad one !

Taken advantage of the finance manager being in a good mood, and a 100 quid Wex voucher. Ordered a Canon 17-55 f2.8, cash back also. Happy days, roll on Tuesday.

You'll enjoy the 17-55. I had a similar decision a few years ago, decided to splash out a bit more on the canon and haven't regretted it since. Cracking lens :)
