Is the Canon G10 still worth buying ?

Hello, I'm looking for a bit of advice if there is anyone with knowledge or experience of the Canon G10.

I've a Canon 40D and am very happy with it, but am after a more pocketable alternative for when i don't want to lug the heavy thing around. But I still want something that I can control as though it's a DSLR and has decent image quality. I understand the menu's on canon's and so would rather not start with a new brand. So I'm looking at either a G10 or G11. I know the G11 is now out and they've damatically dropped the pixel count to counter noise problems, but I can pickup a G10 off amazon for at least £200 less than a G11.

So my question is, is the noise issue on the G10 really that bad ? or is this just an issue in extreme conditions ? for the vast majority of the time would it make any real difference, in which case I'd like to save the extra £200.

any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated

It's a bit noisy over 400 iso, but under that it's fine. I really liked mine (and the G9 before it) but the lack of a decent viewfinder and the slow startup time (common to all compacts with zoom lenses I suppose) made me want to look elsewhere.

I think the G10 is one of the breed of compacts that delivers great results in it's comfort zone. Good light and low ISO basically.

The G11 is from the next family that's a little better out of it's comfort zone.

Both are top drawer, quality cameras but it depends mostly on your personal needs.

The G10 is Canon trying to cram even more pixels into a tiny sensor than the G9 had, so noise will be a problem over ISO 200..

As posted previously, they've dropped the pixel count for the G11 and concentrated on improving noise - very sensible IMO.

Have you considered the Canon S90? It has the same sensor as the G11 but is smaller and has some pretty funky controls that (apparently) work very well.

I think I'm about to buy one over a G11 for underwater use (I'll buy the housing, obviously).

I have the G10 for exactly the same reasons you posted. I love the thing - it's great for what I bought it for. It is a bit disappointing on the noise issue, but to be honest it hasn't been that much of a problem as I never ever take it past ISO 200 myself anyway. If you don't need high ISO then great, if you do, look elsewhere.

My husband uses the G10 for diving, it's a great camera. I find the G10 in housing knocks by buoyancy off really badly, to the point I struggled to stay down with it. Going to take more weights for it on our next trip and see how I get on.

I'm sure the G11 will also be fantastic underwater.

Thanks very much for the guidance, concensus seems to be that it's a great camera providing I avoid using the high iso settings.... just need to think about whether I'd do that or whether I find the extra cash and plump for the G11.

thanks again, much appreciated
