Is the D700 to D3 a common move?

Hi all,

Basically I have been offered a D3 for a very reasonable price and am quite tempted to take the person up on the offer. Problem is I can't really afford to (or justify) keeping a camera of this value but I am quite tempted to buy it with the intention of trading with someone for a D700 + cash, hopefully with me ending up with the camera I want a little cheaper. I know this seems a little long-winded but I will go to a lot of effort to save a little cash :D

Just wondered if this is a fairly common move and whether I am likely to get any takers

I don't think that is the question.

If I understand it correctly, the OP is enquiring whether D700 to D3 is a common upgrade path for others, meaning that he can sell on the cheap D3 he thinks he can obtain, quickly and easily in order for himself to acquire a D700.

Might be wrong though!

yep, thats exactly what I am asking. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to rip anyone off here, it's not the best deal in the world (£1800 for a D3) and just wondered if I am likely to be stuck with it or whether a px would be likely.
 
Well the differences are mainly professional features vs amature features. Like, build quality, dual battery, dual card slot and longer burst (with memory upgrade)

If you aren't going to bash it out, wont shoot all day (or are prepared to swap batteries) wouldn't be devastated if you lost a few photos and dont need to shoot so many shots at once then the D700 is awesome.
 
You need to determine the answer yourself as its such a personal one. I went from the canon 5d to the Canon 1d series and love it. Others will think the 1d series is just too big

Seems a strange way to acquire a D700! Why not just keep the D3? How many shutter actuations does it have - what sort of condition is it in?
 
I know more people who have gone from D3 to D700 than the other way round. The D700 will do 90% of what the D3 can (and with the vertical grip, in some cases more).

You need to decide if you want that extra 10% and how much you want to pay for it.

why not just buy a D700 instead - strikes me as a long route to get one.

Oh yes, it can also leave you enough change for some nice glass :) That is the reason I got one. D3 + sigma 24-70 OR D700 + Nikon 24-70, it was a tough decision....

With the vertical grip, you gain an extra joystick which makes it much easier to change focus points when shooting portrait.
 
I use the 51 point 3D 95% of the time so don't need that! :)

if you put a grip on you won't be able to take shots from inside a pipe with 150mm internal dimensions

Arr but you can take the grip back off. See much better..... So all you jealous D3 owners, form an orderly queue and I might consider swapping :lol:
