Is the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 an upgrade or sideways step?

I currently have a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro/HSM and I want to replace it with something 'better'. (It's also got a scratch on the glass and I don't want to use money fixing it, when I can put it towards another lens.) The problem is, despite coming very close recently to getting the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM, I can't really justify the outlay - it's the wrong side of £600 in my mind. So my thoughts have returned to other lenses.

I'm looking for something faster, e.g. constant f2.8 and possibly with IS. The Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Canon has recently dropped in price on Amazon to £266, but I'm not sure if it's enough of an upgrade over the Sigma and therefore a waste of money. It hasn't got the reach of my Sigma, but the constant f2.8 would be nice. I think I could live with the gap between 50 and 70mm (of my 70-200).

I know I'm being pretty specific, asking if anyone has experience of both lenses, but I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Right then here goes, I owned the 17-70mm and it wasn't a bad lens, but always thought my shots could be sharper probably due to my unsteady hands
Tried a few others incl Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and an appallingly bad Sigma 18-50 variable aperture with OS (went back the next day)

My daughter also felt the same way with her Canon 18-55 IS and bought the newer Sigma 17-70 OS, couldn't believe how badly it front focussed and that went back next day too

I ended up with a s/hand Canon 17-55mm, superb lens, but a tad pricy I agree and my daughter bought the Tamron 17-50 VC which she is very pleased with, i'm very impressed too and that's in comparison with my Canon

Can't help on the non VC 17-50, but take what you wish from our experiences and good luck with whatever you end up with

I agree with the above. If you can do without the 'above 50mm' focal length then the Tamron is the sharper lens and the VC version has the benefit of VC if that's what you require (I do!!). I always think of the Tamron 1-50mm lenses as the poor mans Canon 17-40L!! The AF motor is a little noisy but they do still feel reasonably well made.
