Is there a difference between Nikon's 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8?

Yes
Aside from the obvious!!!!

In terms of IQ, do images from both lenses look the same in terms of colour and sharpness? Is it impossible to tell the difference between the two?

Reason for asking is I have used my 70-200 a bit more of late and very impressed with the images, and would be happy with that quality all the time. So, if the 24-70 is the same, then those 2 would be all I need!

Aside from the obvious...
It's very difficult to say, obviously focal length affects things like DOF ergo bokeh.

That said, the 24-70 is MEGA, no way you could be disappointed, I actually think it's better overall than the 70-200. I have no technical reason for that, just a "feeling".

my two most used lenses - both fabulous - you won't be dissapointed.

Nowt like a quick comparison :D

Slightly darker one shot 2nd, and the sun is on its way down so that figures.

Both @70mm/2.8

Bear in mind it's windy out...

Aside from VR I would imagine there's no important difference at 70mm.

They are practically the same (I have the 70-200 VR1 and the 24-70).

If anything I would say the 70-200 slightly favours green and the 24-70 slightly favours blue.

They're both pretty close - I certainly cannot tell from a quick 'pixel-peep' test shot.
I have the 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 VR-I (which displays slight vignetting on FX bodies at certain apertures)... the VR-II variant does not, but I've not played with one of those yet.

Instead of the 14-24 f/2.8 completing the line up of 'Holy Trinity' lenses, I use an older 17-35 f/2.8 with which you can detect a slight difference, but which I can live with due to the other advantages of that lens - lighter weight and protected front element(and please bear in mind it's very slight and from a lens which is 15 years old now), plus I very rarely need to go as wide as 17mm, let alone 14mm.

Thanks cyclone. Guess 1st is the 24-70 ? Looks very close.

oops deleted them off photobucket because they weren't the best.
Sorry I can't remember what order they came up in, but as Radiohead said, it does answer the question :)

What I do remember is that of the 2 lenses, the 70-200 was longer at 70mm. So one or both of them don't actually do 70mm. They're close enough that it is of no consequence though.
