Looked at a few ultra wide angle lens's recently and haven't found one that has IS. I like the Tokina 11-16 and have heard a new version is due soon so I am waiting to see if this will have IS. I know it's a fast lens but wouldn't IS be useful in low light indoors with no tripod is available? Or is this unheard of

Is there a Image stabilised UWA lens out there??
 
The 15-85mm has IS, but probably not as wide or fast as you're looking for. Are you having specific trouble that you need IS as the Canon 10-22mm is pretty highly rated.
 
I haven't tried any of them yet but just wanted to know if they existed before I bought one. Will be buying for mainly indoor use and landscape but I tend not to carry my tripod with me a lot of times.
 
I love IS but in such wide apertures is neither necessary nor a good alternative to a tripod for landscape at least.
 
Maybe a lighter more compact tripod might be an option or a backpack that carries your tripod easily, it really is a useful tool.
 
Nikon have a VR equipped 16-35 f/4 but I'm not sure the VR would work through an adapter ring?
 
Would it be really necessary? Going by the inverse focal length rule, you'd be able to handhold the 10-22mm down to shutter speeds as low at 1/16th... Taking the Canon crop factor into account: 1 / 10 x 1.6 = 1/16th
 
There's no real need for IS on a UWA.

The 15-85 isn't a uwa.
 
I've never really understood the view that you don't need IS with some lenses as IS adds options and will always do so so I'd like IS with all my lenses. Sometimes we do have the choice and can go for IS or non IS and that's nice as IS adds cost and bulk however sometimes there's simply no choice and sadly wide angle is one of the cases when we don't have a choice.

Unless of course you're a Sony user.

Ok fine, but it's not a UWA, which is what the op is after so it's wholly irrelevant.

Just saying. Do you have to turn everything into a bun fight?

I'd have thought the answer here is obvious, IS allows much longer hand held shutter speeds. UWA's by nature also allow longer hand held shutter speeds.

It's a case of diminishing returns. Most people don't have a use for the ultra low shutter speeds that'd be possible. So there's no market.

Ie. shutter speeds less than 1/60 are generally not going to create sharp pictures of people. But 1/60 on a 200 mm lens needs IS or a camera support. But 1/60 at 10mm is stable. I'm not even sure that the IS technology would allow for sharp quarter of a second exposures?
