I know that there are regular updates with all technology but does anybody have a view if there is an upcoming major update to the Macbook Pro?

I had mine stolen last week and it should be replaced under my new for old insurance policy but I would be happy to wait a month or so if there is a major update due.
 
The most recent refresh of the MBP line was in April this year.

Apple tend to keep a fairly tight lid on new product details until they're officially announced and they don't have a publicly-defined release schedule for new hardware, so you'll never know for sure, but I wouldn't be expecting anything major to turn up in the near future.

If anything is going to happen with new hardware, then it's likely to be around the end of October based on previous history. Then again, years with two updates to the MBP/PowerBook line have usually been following on the heels of a Feburary refresh rather than an April one.

Great thanks, so the latest refresh was in April? Was that a big upgrade or the usual, more RAM, faster processor and bigger HD?
 
Unless you're looking at a 13" macbook pro then you're probably safe.
