Is there a Nikon equivalent of the canon 400mm f5.6?

Ok I can see the confusion! Your stuff is very good, but even if it wasn't I wouldn't have said that!
 
I can get where OP is coming from, I think. He prefers the 'look and feel' of photos taken with Nikon cameras ... how hard is that? Why do people have to jump in swinging about all gear being the same etc ... sometimes different gear will bring different results. For wildlife the D800 will allow greater crop-ability for one.

its entirely the OPs call but he's going to be disapointed if thats all he wants , because there isn't a 'look and feel' of nikon camera, or canon cameras , it merely depends on how the individual camera is set up

about the only real difference is 36mp vs 24 mp - and to be honest in the real world thats going to mean jack as either body offers more cropability than lens resolving of detail will actually allow - also 36mp is going to mean bigger files and potentially slower buffering (if that matters)

one thing that is of note is that the nikon 200-400 f4 is a lot cheaper than the canon 200-400 f4 - and that is a brilliant lens for wildlife - but personally i wouldn't be changing systems purely for that as what you'll drop selling up would be more than the difference (and thats not a gear loyalty thing - i wouldnt advise selling a bunch of nikon gear to move to canon either)

on point there isnt a nikon 400mm f5.6 prime (you could use a 200mm f2.8 and 2xtc or a 300mm f4 and a 1.5tc but results won't be the same)

I would change tomorrow if I felt that one manufacturer's lens line up was more appropriate to my needs……….. long lens are expensive and when you start investing in 400mm f2.8 to 800mm f4 you need to be sure as you can about which is the one for you.

Bodies are not expensive and selling used you can recover 50% + and the same with some lens …… making a "jump" is not as expensive as it may seem

I am a Nikon shooter with a 300mm f4, 300mm f2.8, 70 200mm and 600mm f4 etc., etc.+ + ….. before getting the 600mm I thought seriously about the 5Diii because of the merits of the Canon 600mm f4 versus the Nikon equivalent ….. plus there seems to be more Canon used stuff around as I usually buy used.

What the OP is asking is to have a perfectly reasonable debate as far as equipment is concerned ………. rather than jump on him and make comments that bring his photographic skill into question just discuss the merit and personal preferences of the equipment he is asking about.

I know that we have guys on here who can take marvellous shots with "any" camera, but we are not all like that and some may not even want to be.

there has been one comment about the difference between (any) two photographers being infinite, which the op wrongly interpreted as bringing his skill into question but thats all

yeah but its a zoom - so not really comparable with a 400mm prime
