Is there such a thing as this?

You know how you see movie directors looking through a lens thingy at the 'scene'? (well, i presume that's what it is) Well it got me thinking...

I struggle to know what focal length to use to get the most from a landscape when I am out and about and tbh usually just keep the 17-40 on the camera and don't really experiment that much. I don't really know what focal length would give me what sort of field of vision.

So... is there such a thing as a little handheld lens (doesnt need to be high iq, even a plastic lens would do the job) that you can zoom in and out with to get an idea of how a scene will look at a particular focal length.

And if there isn't... do you just sort of learn through experience? How long does it take until you just sort of intuitively know what length to use?

My Grandad makes a box with his forefingers and thumbs and looks through that.
No focal length scale though sorry.

I think I know what your talking about, but all I do is set my camera up and play around with the different focal lengths, and also locations to get what I am after.

I seem to know if the shot would be better with a telephoto or wide angle though, so choosing a lens isn't an issue, then I just zoom in and out a bit to get the most out of the shot.

Either buy some primes, or for a cheaper fix tape your lens to one focal length and spend all day shooting that, the next time tape it to another length.

Over time you'll become accustomed to seeing a scene as your camera would at a certain focal length.

Buy a bridge camera and have a play with that beforehand maybe......
