Hi, I have been offered (from a friend of a friend's brother!) a 5d mk2 along with a genuine Canon grip, a 24-70 and a 50mm 1.4 prime for £2100.

It has been dropped off at my friends house for me to have a play with, so-

The grip will not come off- at least, I think not, the dial spins fairly easily in both directions and a bit of googling leads me to think it is possible the mechanism has sheared off? Is this something which can be repaired and if so at what cost?

It is really quite grubby (stinks of smoke too) and I am wondering how well it has been looked after.

The lenses look good, pictures look nice and sharp I think, can't see any dust etc although not entirely sure if I am looking in all the right places?

So do you think there are too many red flags to bother with this? Is the price a good one? I thought buying from someone I 'knew' might have an advantage, now I'm not so sure.
 
If it were me, I'd walk away. Sounds like the grip mechanism has sheared and I think I've heard of people needing to hacksaw it off.

Hmm, that's what I thought really, just finding it painful passing up the two lovely lenses and camera for what seems like a decent price. However, if it looks too good to be true then...etc
 
No have a look in the for classified . You can get 2nd hand 5d mk2 for about £1200 or less. Grip £140. 50mm 1.4 for about £270. Not sure about the 24 70mm price. Without the problems you mentioned.
 
I know you are right- I wasn't even looking for the grip and 50mm, I only really want the camera and 24 70mm, so it doesn't make sense to take the risk. Thanks for the replies.

that's interesting...what price should I be looking at for a 2nd hand 5d mk2 and a 24-70mm do you thnk then? Perhaps I am expecting to pay too much?
 
Ah, ok, so I would be looking at around £2000 for the two I want then?
 
Still, not worth it at all IMO. Decent 5d MK IIs with low shutter count have gone on here for about £1150 recently. I just picked up a mint 24-70 2.8 for £650 from Park Cameras second hand (though I think that was a very good price :) ).

Here's another take Cocohoney ( great name btw )

You could make your seller an offer for the lenses.

24-70 for say £750 which saves around £100 from a second hand dealer. The 50/1.4 could be worth £200 ( £250+ at dealer ). Total comes to £950. Graham was extremely fortunate to pick up a 24-70 for £650. That price is almost unheard of. You then have a balance of £1150 to go hunting for a 5D2 on this board. They are around £1300 at pre-loved dealers like MPB or Mifsuds.

Full price for the 5D2 and 24-70 from dealers will be around £2150. Remember that will be with some form of warranty so £1900 or thereabouts via a private sale on this forum for example would be about right.

I have bought all of these over the last year or so, but would expect to pay the following in good condition second hand:

Canon 5d2 - £1200
Canon 24-70 f2.8 - £800
Canon 50 f1.4 - £250
Genuine Canon grip - £80

That lot totals £2330 and in good nick, so on that basis I would say its not a good deal.

Go in low, list your concerns - Grip won't come off, aroma of smoke & potential gumming up of the workings due to the tar (make a deal of it) and bid him £1800 as it will all need to go to canon for service etc.

Wipe the camera over with a citrus cleaner, either live with the grip permenantly connected or send it in to Canon and get it serviced/repaired and sell the 50f 1.4 to cover the cost.

At the end of the day it is a killer collection that only needs a 580EXII to complete it!

Not a bad idea that. I wonder how many actuations there might be on that sensor... All things being equal, £1800 sounds like a good place to start. Assuming you eventually settled on £1900, it probably still is a reasonable buy, all things considered and if you can live with the 5D2 with a permanent grip.
 
Hmmm, that gives me something to think about, especially as I have just been offered some lights too (Bowens 400d kit, £250, good price? Seems pricey to me, but I know nothing) I am still not sure how well it has been looked after- it looked rather unloved if you know what I mean, poor thing.
I have told him for now I will think about it anyway, because of the grip, I wasn't sure how to find the shutter actuations? Wish I could have checked them, owner has no idea what they might be.

Thanks for the tips on costing, I will keep an eye out on here for any coming up too.
