is this a bad idea?

I read that you can use a step down or step up adapter to use one filter on different size lenses. It would save money but if there are downfalls to doing this I sure would like to know.
Also, is there a certain maximum step up. I dont see this being possible but I have a 58mm filter and a 77mm lens. Seems like a bit of a stretch but I have no clue how this works. Thanks for your help.

You can always use a bigger filter than the specified one for a lens, but if you use a smaller one you run the risk of vignetting (darkening of the corners of the image). The smaller the filter, the greater the amount of vignetting.

If you have a 58mm filter and a 77mm lens then you need a step down ring but you will get significant vignetting as you are reducing the lens area.

I have just bought a 58-77mm step up ring from ebay to use with my 55-300mm nikkor so I can borrow my (generous) friend's 77mm filters.

Do not be tempted by the sets of rings as they give all sorts of problems!

Just buy the correct size filter. You don't want that mess on the end of your lens

Step up adapters are fine (Filter is larger than the lens), but I wouldn't use a step down adapter (Filter is smaller than the lens) as you will suffer with serious vignetting...

I'd purchase a new filter for the 77mm lens...

if your using a cropped sensor camera and normal lenses ( not lenses designed for cropped sensors ) you could use a smaller filter with a step down ring as long as you didn't go too much smaller as the outer part of the lens would not be seen by the sensor

if you could get away with going from 77mm to 58mm without vignetting i don't know it's something iv'e never tried
