Hello,

I have been looking at getting a better walk about/indoor lens for my canon 450d. I already have a nifty fifty and a canon 70-200 F4L. If I had the money I would have the canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 but its rather expensive at £675.

As an alternative I have been looking at the Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC Lens, its F2.8 throughout and has image stabalisation.

Is this a good alternative? Do you know of other alternatives. My max budget is about £400 give or take. Is anyone selling a canon for that? (had to ask)

The Non VC version is indeed a very sharp lens and well worth the money. I have not used a VC version but when it came out many had to be returned due to failure.

Some people say you don't need VC on a 17-50mm lens especially when it's f2.8. Mine was a joy to use.

I have read the same things

Although I would imagine of you are shooting at a shutter speed where VC would be useful the VC lens would come out sharper. Compromise a little on sharpness for a more shooting ability if you are likely to be in marginal light.
 
I have the non VC lens and it is indeed a good lens. IS is always nice to have though as is USM but sadly this lens has neither. It does come with a hood though but no pouch.
