28-300 F3.5 - 5.6 L series

I have a 16-35mm but found that for studio work even with a 50D sensor it is still to wide for models

I borrowed a 24-70 f2.8l and although this would be my weapon of choice but cannot afford it.

I have aquired the 28-300 for a long term loan and it has the range I need although not having the really low aperture i can't see any reason why not to use it for studio work...

Does anyone else use a telephoto lens for studio work or am I going to be (lets put it bluntly) the only *plank* turning up to a studio with a huge lens.

Thanks G

If your happy then use it, but i think you'll be the only one with a huge white lens! or disguise it as a 70-200?

24-70 or 70-200 are probably your best bets for studio i would have thought.

I can also get loan of the 70-200L but I wonder for small shooting areas I am going to be missing a small gap between my wide angle and the 70-200

the 28-300 bridges all these gaps.

putting the 2 lenses together the 28-300(when wide angel) and the 70-200 are roughly the same size.

yeah i'd be happy to use it until I can afford to by my own 24-70

I was doing portriats last night in a home studio and found I was shooting mainly at 100mm

see results here http://www.g-r.biz/test.jpg

i'm still a beginner to shooting portrait studio type shoots
i'm normally an event photographer.

I understood the 28-300 to win on convenience, but IQ is compromised by the nature of the lens range - ie ultimately less sharp and more distortion. Heavy too.

I didn't notice the distortion , this is clearly better than any no L series lens I have used

haven't you considered using a prime, the 85mm f1.8 doesnt cost much and the IQ is really good from pics ive seen. also what about third party 24-70mm's theres one by sigma, of course they wont have the IQ of canon glass but it will be very marginal and the sigma is a fraction of the price.

yeah i have done actually I was recommended to get one but its just rather than spending the money I have save to get a prime I would rather have the 24-70 (or what ever comes out to replace it)

thing is my company has all sorts of lenses and i can long term loan them so rather than buy a sigma i might as well wait.

big problem is the company 24-70 is my boses main lens so its hard to borrow as he always uses it

Id borrow the 70-200 to be honest, its going to be a lot sharper than the 28-300.

Ok like you say if your shooting in a confined area it will be an issue, but how often are you going to be shooting in an area that small?

yeah I think I will then :-) thanks for the advice :-)

or be cheeky and borrow both!

or you say your company has loads of lenses you can borrow are there any others that would cover the below 70mm more suited to your studio work?

yeah Like I said they have the 24-70 but its my bosses main lens so not easy to loan...

not out the question I borrow both the 28-300 70-200

I wish my work had lenses i could borrow!

the funny thing is, my work isn't even a photography company... it offers the services but no one ever takes them.

we are a completely different sector

but I aint complaining because the equipment is there.
