is this a good tripod for a newbie ?

Depending on what you are going to do with it, at 2.4kg + head its not light (about the same as mine). I don't go walking or anything with that!

yes it does look heavy, tbh i wouldn't expect me to go walking that often with it unless i have my little girl and the pram, so the bag tends to sit on the pram :)

alternative is a 2nd hand Benro M-128 number 6 set of legs with a Benro KB-0A head for £70

i was unsure about the height though, as the seller says
fully extended the camera will sit 136cm off the ground. There's also a 32cm centre column

I have that set of legs and head. It's not the lightest, but the bag has a very nicely padded strap which helps to spread the load out nicely. I've found it solid enough for anything with the camera and normal lenses on it. I've also used it with my 600mm scope, and a 2xTC to shoot the moon, and whilst at 1200mm it takes a moment of two to settle after touching the camera or scope, it does a good of it.

Don't think you get the discount on sale items. Also I suspect you will end up getting the ball head at some point. I did after a while with the panning head and it's much better imo.

Well it arrived today, 1st impressions : great height without extending the centre collum, good build quality, quite heavy ( which i'm fine with ) & a nice bag to carry it with. I've only had a quick play with it but happy with my purchase so far.

i met up with the guy today and brought the above, very nice and light enough with it being CF :)

saved a lot over a new cf tripod of that quality!
