Is this a true macro lens

Thank you, I have no idea, and because I have see some truly amazing photographs here I am man enough to admit when I have been beaten into submission by people here and want to get a macro lens.

But I have a dilema, as, I can't afford to make a mistake financially, so I have to chose between the Tamron 90mm £80 less or this.

Only the people of the macro forum will know the answer, please and thank you.
 
Go for the Canon 100mm Macro (they come up used on here around £300) because

It has internal focus - the lens doesn't extended when focusing, important for lens mounted flashes

It has a longer working distance (distance from the end of the lens to subject at 1:1) Canon 150mm, Tamron 99mm and Sigma 105mm - 122mm

Thank you for taking the trouble to list such useful information, that is something I had not considered.

I have been looking at your macro shots with envy, what lens do you use.

You won't regret that decision. It's a stunning lens :)

Well you can always use your tubes with the macro lens! :)
 
I've got the L version of this lens with the advanced IS and it is amazing, sharp as a tack SOOC and close enough to see compound eyes and similar on insects without any tubes on it. I'm getting the MP-E65 macro lens tomorrow which starts off at 1:1 and goes up to 5:1 or 5 times larger than life size on the sensor. Cant wait to try it!

Good choice, one of Canons best.

Just be aware your going to get backache now with all the bending down looking for little critters to shoot :D

Good on you for listening to advice of others and being willing to change your opinion, there are plenty who would be to pig headed to do so. As for the lens, it is a cracker and I am sure you'll love using it.
