Is this lens as sharp as it should be? Possible front focus? The answer!

That would have been a problem Hugh but the Defocus Control was left in neutral throughout the whole process.

What "defocusing between each" means is that the after each test photo the lens was focused to infinity to ensure that it would have to actively refocus on the target each time.

OK, just wondered . I have to admit every copy of this lens you tried sounds unusual, which sounds like theres a not obvious solution, but I'm lost as to what it may be

Read on a forum/review somewhere that the dc version was softer than the micro version. Can't remember where tho... Google search

Very worthwhile, I'd say. I'd read Ken's comments before but the Luminous Landscapes thread was new to me and very interesting. One lens I'd forgotten is the Sigma 85mm f1.4. When I get back from hols I'm going to see if I can find one of those to try. Similar price to the nikon macro 105mm but may suit me better.

Glad you sorted it out! And also glad you chose newer tech in the form of the D300 rather than a D2x - which has neither AF adjust or live view focussing !
