Is this lens compatible with a D3100?

The first Nikon AF cameras had the focus motor in the body. It couples to the lens using a fitting which looks a bit like a flat blade screwdriver.

Later Nikon lenses have the motor built in.

The higher range of Nikon cameras will work with either type of lens but the smaller, more entry level models don't have the focus motor in the body so it needs to be in the lens.

Steve.

Depends on the exact lens. Sigma lenses need HSM in the title to AF with the non motorised bodies.

As above, the earlier sigma 70/300 didn't have a focus motor in the lens
