Is this normal (lens flare)

I bought a sigma 17 70 last week took it out last nite for an hour and found a lot of what i think is lens flare at 17mm. I took the same shots with a difftent lens and found no flare.
Does anyone know if this is normal or does the lens have to go back??

On this pic it also looks like there is something on the lens but the glass was completely clean

Do you have a filter fitted eg a uv or protection filter?

Edit: the reason I ask is fliters I find are the number one cause of this type of flare, it's caused when light reflects of the front element and is then back at the camera by the filter

Since there was not filter it would be my suggestion it is just particularly unfortunate reflections within the lens..it's not exactly unheard of especially when there are so many bright light sources as in your photo
 
I have the Sigma 10-20mm and this suffers from lens flare also, looks like lens flare to me do not thnk the lens is faulty.
 
Looking at the photo you can actually see the lights that have caused the issue, it's 1 light on the left of the centre column and the 5 lights to right of it, but because of the reflection they are reversed in the flare
 
Yes lens flare, but at least you can clone the spots out in Photoshop, back in the film days there was no cure for this.

If you create another layer and rotate it in PS you will see the flare spots and the bright lights will line up. (damn must type faster;))

thanks guys thats what i was thinking. still a little unsure about the bottom left of the 2nd pic
 
Totally normal, the 17-70 hates light sources in shot giving really ugly shaped flare.
