Is this photo unsaveable?

Anyway, this is the photo I wanted to enter into the Canon competition, but I'm afraid it's not technically good enough

but if it can be saved, what can I do?

Did you shoot RAW or Jpeg? If RAW it'll be more workable exposure wise but you will still have the problem that only a small amount is in focus.

It looks like there might be a bit more movement blur than you'd really like but the subject is well exposed and that shot is well within working tolerances.

perhaps it's not 100% technically perfect but it does a good job of capturing the moment and telling the story.... surely the whole point????

Did a quick colour correction and sharpened it and it looks a bit better now.

Shot in jpeg, haven't got round to going into RAW mode yet, not sure why

The colours definately look better in Zaphod's edit. I would be inclined to say it was a little over sharpened though. If you have Photoshop it may be worth experimenting with unsharp mask to try and sharpen the high contrast on the scoring player without sharpening the background players.
