I want to print documents from my kids school laptop using the printer on the main pc, the main pc is wired to a wireless router and the laptop connects wireless and the printer to the main pc is wired. A friend said its possible to create a network wireless between the laptop and main pc.

Indeed it is.

Is both machines running on XP?

If so IIRC, right click on the printer (on desktop) and turn on sharing on the sharing tab.

Then on the laptop, use start>run to navigate to the main pc (using it's IP Adress). The printer should come up alongside the sharing folders etc.

Nb. To find out the ip address of the desktop, click start>run, then type cmd. This will bring up a dos window. Then type ipconfig and it will tell you the IP Adress of machine. EG 192.168.2.2. Now go to the laptop and type this in to the start run with \\ in front.

So EG \\192.168.2.2

If they are both in the same workgroup as long as file and printer sharing is active on both pc's there's no need for IP addresses.
You would simply install a network printer on the laptop, when searching it should show up when you search for printer as a shared printer on your main PC.

Aye, but using ip address cuts out the faff of checking as should work either way! :D

And don't forget to leave the main PC on otherwise the printer won't work! Sounds silly but it's easy to forget.

oo Good call Graham! You could also get a new router that has a usb print port built in....

I don't know why but you handle sounds rude. I think it's the word "smooth" that's doing it. Could be because of that farmer county girl from Big Brother always saying "I'm going to smooth him over". Hated that expression. But don't hate your handle, just sounds rude that's all. hehe

 Funny you should say that... I was angling for a change, but once you have chosen you are stuck!

Phew! When I first started reading that I skimmed it and read "I dont know why but you sound rude"!

 No violent tendencies or thoughts behind it - used to do video editing and liked the word smooth!
