Is this to good to be true?

I found a local add that was just posted for a 7d for a third of the going price. I'm not sure if he is the original owner but all he has is the battery and body (I think). I ask if he had a receipt but he said he does not. Anyway it's very cheap and he said that he bought it but never used it but everyone says that. My first thought was that it doesn't work or he would rob me. Anyway, I will take precautions and check the camera to make sure it works fine but I was wondering if there is any other advise you may have for me. I'm just having a hard time thinking I can buy a 7d for 250 dollars. Thanks for your help.
 
yup probably stolen, or its been hammered to death I would think.
 
I don't know the law on stolen property in Texas but I imagine it's broadly similar to the UK, and I'd be very careful. If you buy this, and it's been stolen, the police will seize it and you won't get any sort of compensation. You might have to answer some awkward questions too, and if they think you knew, or suspected, that it was stolen when you bought it.........?

Hmmm does sound a little bit iffy....

You could ask for some photos of the body, showing the serial number - is there anyway you could check from the serial number over in Houston, to see if it's stolen or ligit ?

He says he bought it, but never used it - did he register it with Canon or anyone else re warranty ?

Could you ask when and where he bought t from - would they have a record of the sale ? (the shop may not give you many / any details, but maybe could confirm buying ???)


I do tend to agree though, if it founds too good to be true...
 
It's too cheap, has no packaging, standard accessories or receipt and you're worried about being robbed. Why would you bother?
 
if you must "have a look at it" take 4 burly mates with you.hth mike personally would'nt touch it with a barge pole:(
 
Well it was true. He bought it a year in a half ago and was going to build a kit. He was in his early 20's and was too green to have pulled anything fishy. The body has never been used, not even a lens has been on it. It had a couple of scratched on the body where he had set it down. He did not have any kind of case for it. He went though some hardship a while back and sold pretty much everything but this. Now he figured out how much a lens and the rest of the kit was going to cost so he decided he could not afford to go forward. I think he bought it on a wimm. It was a one in a thousand opportunity and I cashed in. I will run the serial number but I am confident that this is a legit deal. Thanks for your help everyone.View attachment 3712

I've just bought one myself, so far I'm pretty impressed with it though it's certainly taking some getting used to.

Excellent deal. All that negative pish 'if it sounds too good to be true.......' 'it must be stolen....' blah blah blah. How do you know until you do what you did and go find out for yourself. Well done on getting a great bargain;)
 
Thanks everyone. I figured I could always walk away if it smelled bad when I got there. I'm sure it's not stolen and I will double check. I shot it today and it worked fine except I kept hitting the back button to focus lol. I think I might put it up for sale because I really want another 5d3 as my second body. I will look closely at the performance and I.q before I decide. I guess the moral of the story is, you never know until you check. ;)
 
Just an update. I found an app for apple computers that tells you the shutter count. The 7D I just bought has less that 2900 shots on it. I checked on my 5d3 that is around a year old and my only camera till now and it it had 10k shutter pulls. So I think this the 7D is basically new ;)

Do bear in mind that a 7d needs some time to get its full potential out of it and if you just stick it in one of the auto modes and look at JPGs straight OOC you may be a little underwhelmed. Have a look at the 7d users threads for getting the best out of a superb crop body. Dont forget that extra reach you will get from your lenses with that 1.6 crop factor. Could be a more useful second to your 5Dmk3 than you think.

Oh and well done with that bargain. wow!
