Is this worth £80 ?

Yeah, seems a bit pricey for a used copy even if it is mint.

Personally I'd go for the APO version if I was going for this lens. I owned the APO version for a while and apparently it's a significant improvement on the regular DG.

You can probably get them down a bit in price though.

prob not as so many people comment that the APO version is far better[identified by red ring around top of barrel]

dont know Digital Canon - will this AF on yours..?

No such worries with Canon, only Nikon mess about with entry-level models..


No idea whether it's better or not than ath Canon as I've never used that Canon lens, but two bumps in 30 mins..

I have the APO version, it gets brought out from time-to-time as I don't generaly need a telephoto. In good light it's a reasonable lens, but it suffers in less than ideal conditions.

If you're looking at replacing the Canon lens, what is it you don't like about the Canon?
 
Gaz, a 400mm f/2.8 wont improve your pics, youve gone over this several times and been told by several pro's that it's you and your technique at fault not your equipment, for a guy who flatly refuses the advice of pros to read the bleeding manual this is becoming silly.

take the previous advice onboard

The Canon lens is generally thought to be a great lens, certainly one of the better performing lenses in it's price bracket (I owned one and loved it). Unless you desperately need the extra reach of the 70-300, I'd concentrate on improving your own technique instead of thinking a lens change will do this for you.
 
Ok guys advice taken, back to the manual for me. I do get some good photos but it's probably just a fluke

These were taken with the 55-250 on my 500D. No PP at all and they look pretty good in my opinion. The only thing that could be letting them down is my technique but I'm still learning!
