Is Toast quicker

Does anyone know if Toast is quicker at burning DVD's than the standard DVD burning options that comes with Leopard.

It seems that DVD burning using Sonic on my 3 year old Dell is quicker than on my Mac Book Pro .

Or is it just me?
 
Hmm I would have *thought* that the burn speed would be limited by the hardware rather than software :thinking:

Its much of a muchness really. Any speed benefits by better coded software are going to be so marginal that you won't notice.

Speed is limited by hardware and media mainly
 
It's more to do with the media you are writing to and the hardware specs than the software being used. A really fast drive and crap discs is gonna make for a slow burn time. That said i never burn at full speed, drop it down a notch, i've noticed this makes for less coasters too!
 
Really just as I thought. May have to look at an external FW800 drive if I need more speed than the internal one. Need to do some speed tests first though

buy some decent quality Verbatim disks or similar and retry to get a definitive answer
 
Funnily enough I am using Verbatim disks.

It just seems the my Mac Book Pro is slower at writing DVD's than my Del. I'll need to do some speed tests to accretion if it's the case or not. Maybe because I don't see a countdown timer on the Mac it's the impression that it takes longer
 
OK results from some tests

Write 3.2Gb data to DVD verbatim 16X DVD

Mac Book Pro ( internal drive 8x max) 17 mins

Dell 5150 PC (internal drive Max 16x average 11x ) 11 mins( Roxio software )
Dell 5150 PC ( Internal drive limited to 8X ) 13 1/2 mins

All DVD write and then verified. Watching the progress ( talk about paint drying) the PC seems to score when verifying the disk?

So is it Hardware or software.. I don't know
 
Could be because you are coming from a laptop hard drive instead of a desktop drive as the laptop drives are generally slower the data transfer rate will be affected, is the laptop in the mains or on battery?
 
Laptop is running off mains, but the drive is slower on the laptop than the desktop,although I wouldn't have thought it would have that much effect.
