Hi,

Just a quick question and hopefully an easy one.

I've noticed that most *** use ISO 200, and achieve great shots.

And from what I've read, understood and tried, by increasing my ISO the camera is less reliant on slow shutter speeds, but can give the image a bit of noise if too high.

What will happen to an image if i go lower than 200?

My D300s goes:

250
200
L0.3
L0.7
L1.0

The ISO is the camera sensors sensitivity to light. The aperture is the amount of light that hits the sensor. The shutter speed is how long that light hit the sensor.

So by decreasing the ISO, you are decreasing the cameras sensitivity to light. That means you have to compensate by either using a wider aperture or slower shutter speed - or a combination of the two.

So to your question about what will happen to your image if you lower the ISO - unless you adjust the aperture and shutter speed the image will become darker.

From the days of film I believed that the lower the iso the better the IQ which seemed the follow with dslr iso until Nikon and possible others came up with a software system that took iso lower and higher than just the range of the sensor with on the d300 and d90 the lowest iso being 200 not 100 as in my d60 and others. I don’t know if this is what the OP meant but I would like to know if using lower than 200iso on these cameras has a negative effect on IQ.

Those Lo settings on Nikons are software equivalents, hence why they're not called ISO 100 etc..

What Lo1.0 (ISO 100 equivalent) is doing is giving you the working sensitivity of a sensor at ISO 100, but I'm led to believe that it's just software 'mimicking' that ISO. Not actually sure if noise will actually reduce though....

Nikon uses ISO 200 as it's "native" ISO and going lower than this is not going to give better IQ in the same way that using a 100iso film will give less grain than 200iso film.

I'm not overly worried as it means that higher shutter speeds can be used than with a 100iso film slr.

I would probably mainly shoot 1/125s on a film slr (with iso100 film loaded) but 1/250s on a dslr (i'm talking daylight scenes here).

As with all things photographic remove one problem and another bites your bum.
If you are using fill in flash on one of the few sunny days unless you can uses a high speed sinc your shutter speed is limited so f stop is set for the depth of field you want so now is it going to be better to use the software ISO or a nd filter
