Issues with tethered shooting in LR3 & 20D [Solved]

Hi everyone , i've been trying to set up tethered shooting with my 20D and lightroom 3.

I installed the Canon Codec for the camera to my laptop (windows 7). In lightroom i go to "start tethered capture " etc and the little bar comes up.

It detects the camera, as it comes up as " Canon 20D "

However, on the camera itself it keeps flashing " busy " therefore not allowing me to capture any images. ISO/WB etc doesn't show up on the LR bar either...


I tried changing communication settings but it didn't work.

Any ideas?

SOLUTION: For anyone else experiencing this problem:

-Download the latest codec onto your computer for your camera from the Canon website
-Download the latest USB WIA driver for your computer
-Ensure communication mode on your camera is set to "normal"

Hi Adam

Off the top of my head

If you have canon utilities click not to start when connected.If you don't have it when you connect your camera to LR the "busy " is that it's saving all the photos on the card to the LR folder, you can change it so it doesn't do it in LR preference

If this doesn't sort it let me know and i will look into it

Hi Shane,

I bought it 2nd hand off here so don't have Canon Utilities. The memory card is blank but I can't seem to find where to turn this off in preferences anyway..

Hi Adam

codec is for movie file that you play on the pc .
If the card is empty format it first then all i did was plug in usb then turn onthe camera it says "busy" for a few seconds,shut down auto play,start LR

Tried that and it didn't work :(

I am trying this using " PTP " communication mode.

If i put it to "normal" then it's not even detected in LR3

I didn't think the 20D was officially supported by Lightroom tethering.

You could use the Canon software and tell Lightroom to monitor the folder you shoot into.

I was beginning to think that. As i said above it turned out i needed a driver so that it would pick up the USB in normal mode and it works perfectly with Lightroom now :)

It previously didn't detect the camera in normal mode ( the mode required for tethering ) which lead me to believe it was something to do with the USB

I was happy to find your story, because it matched mine word to word. Could you please be so kind to provide the links to the latest codec and driver for Win7 (64) download? I can not find them.

This link brought me to the same result as I had from many other attempted downloads (incl. from Canon site). It says it can NOT be installed on my OS. I think it's not compatible with 64-bit.
That's why your post caught my attention, you have Win 7!
