iTR AF on 1 DX-any good?

Stew very simmilar.. accept I am indoors so can only use a 70-200 (my 400 much better at this if was outdoors) The long jump always the hardest.. but you dont need to move the focus point.. when you point the camera at subject its on center point.. I point direct at face.. if i then lower the lens (holding bbf) to get the whole body in.. the iTR keeps focus on the face... this is using 61 point auto focus.. then no matter where they go if i follow then the focus stays on face.. moves about a bit but moves about the face.. works loverly like that.. does that sound simmilar?

I think you're right Tony.:agree:
Centre point probably gets a better initial lock, I suppose I just find it hard to get out of old habits in the way I do things. :wacky:

woooh .. I only tried it once.. could see it working as I expected.. But I could be totally on the wrong page.. don't take my comments as expert cus I am testing it thats all :)

this is my first time off center spot..i do move it about around 9 others.. but this really is my first experience with the more complex side of track/focus
 
Just to throw the cat in amongst the pigeons again, I tried the iTR last weekend on some Time Trial cyclist & it was absolutely dire.
They were single riders coming directly towards me, low sun was side/slightly back lighting the subjects, I tried with a starting af point at top of the grid focused on their faces & also centre point moving camera down as riders approached. Not sure if the crash hats & visors/eye protection were confusing the iTR but it was rarely locking on & tracking their faces, it was jumping to front forks, overtaking cars, front wheels & virtually anything that was glinting in the sun.
As soon as I switched to my normal single point af (out of auto) everything was fine.

As I said earlier in the thread there do seem occasions where iTR works very well but also lots where it doesn't work at all. :confused:

PS. This was with the 300f2.8 wide open.

It needs reasonably good lighting (manual says best to turn off if not) and it needs a face surely? you really havent got a face for it to latch onto.. visors and such like will confuse it surely....
 
Even on the riders where they had crash hats & no visors, af was still often jumping to front wheels & forks so I dunno.

hmmm dunno either :) I liked it for what I needed it for.. havent used it since.. wont be too often i guess...

Same here, it worked on the wake boarding far better than anything else for me. I suppose we just need to be very selective when we use it. :)
