I spent the day at the Arundel WWT centre in the glorious sunshine on Monday, which turned out to be a most enjoyable day. I wonder if I might ask if you would mind helping me out with the identification of a few of our watery friends please?

First the ones I think I know (please correct if i've got them wrong):

(1) Hawaiian Goose

(2) Mr Mallard on final approach

(3) "It was *this* big" said Mr Mallard. Mrs Duck wasn't impressed.

(4) "Would you believe it, there's a goose looking back at me under the water?"

(5) The Mandarin duck spread eagle

(6) Goldeneye, Miss Moneypenny

(7) Relaxing in the pool (Long Tailed Ducks)

(8) Absolutely quackers. Mallards really are fantastic ducks which we take for granted.

(9) Crispy Fried Duck! (oh that's harsh)

(16) Its not a Water Rail is it?

(17) Whooper or Bewick, and how can you tell without a tape measure?

Thanks in advance for any help with the IDs!

I love the Falcated Teal. we don't have them here in the U. S.

I'm not sure we're supposed to have them here ourselves, according to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcated_Duck, the live in Asia and Russia. I find it difficult knowing at these WWT places which are local, arriving under their own steam, and which have been carted in.

I'm assuming one of these is the male and one is the female?

Nice set, I love that place.
I think these are correct.

13 Wood Duck
14 White Faced Whistling Duck
15 Female pheasant
16 Merganser
17 Bewick

WOW!, so much to choose from!, you certainly were busy capturing all those birds, half of which i have never seen.

A very nice selection of images.

Best regards Paul

Nice place Arundel though I think the numbers earlier are incorrect

13 common merganser
14 wood duck
15 whistling duck
16 female pheasant by look
17 Whoopers are big, Bewicks are the smallest swan in UK

A lovely series, all nice and sharp. I like the Canadian goose (y)in particular.

"Ken" Whoopers are big, Bewicks are the smallest swan in UK

If they aint stood side by side how do you tell  :D

Nice Set (y)

Did you get attacked by that nasty hawaiian goose up by the start of the reed board walk ?

That's what I can't figure out either. I mean, is a junior Whooper therefore a Bewick? Who decided they are a different species?

Certainly did, he/she is a spiteful thing. To think we were feeding his/her brethren at Slimbridge last month too!

Fantastic shots, this place is on my list of places to go, I can't believe I still haven't been there yet. I'll be very happy if I came back with shots like that.

Probably Ken

One of my favourite places to go......and worth taking out a year's membership if you go often.........it's near enough to where I live for me to pop in for just an hour or so if I feel like it. They do a nice lunch in the cafe as well!

A good set of shots btw.............it's good to be able to get close to the birds and yet still be able to photograph them without fences etc in the way(y)
