Watch the blood pressure Graham.............

And I have no idea about slykdexium.

On a similar subject, why does almost everyone who can't spell claim to have dyslexia?

Thats a primary school thing. If a child struggles with spelling, rather than admit their teaching style is crap, they say the child is dyslexic, and thus the problem is no longer theirs.

It also gets to me when I read it.

I started a thread a while back: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=144026&highlight=lens+lens

Still about 60% of the time I see someone start a thread about a lens, the will spell it lens.

So you did - and only a few weeks ago too. I missed that. I did a google search before I posted and found that the subject has popped up on various other forums, including some American ones, so we are not alone. :geek:

I dinae, but you shid try spellin braid Scots.

For some reason I have no problem understanding broad scots, or even slim ones. The only dialect I can't fathom is that from the east end of Glasgow. It's a sad day when the asylum seekers have a better grasp of english than the natives

Having worked in your fine country for some time over the years, the only dialect I struggle to even begin to comprehend is the one in and around Elgin....:cuckoo:

Ah but Elgin is a funny place!;)

It's political correctness gone mad, but there again is it any worse than teaching pre-1980s where dyslexia was not accepted, rather the kid was considered to be intellectually challenged.

Seeing as we are an international forum, American spellings are just as valid(even if it is wrong)

Perhaps, but I also had someone tell me that the reason they said "I seen that" or "I done that" was because they were dyslexic....

You must admit though, there will be a lot of people who will go through life mistakenly thinking that they are using the correct spelling of this word, even though they are not, unless some people challenge it now and again .
But 'LENS' is spelt correctly.

It is the extraneous additional 'E' that ruins it.

RANT ON
...and can we PLEASE cut out the 'could of', 'would of' rubbish.

It's 'could have' and 'would have'

And it has NEVER been

'I can't be arsed'.

That is meaningless.

The phrase is 'I can't be asked'..
RANT OFF......for now!

and for good measure the 'a' is short.

For god's sake if you can't speak correctly at least write correctly!!

God will get you for that.

Later.

Three pages that made me laugh out loud. (or put another way, LOL) Just what I needed before turning the PC off for the night.

Correct spelling and use of grammer is a subject that raises it's head often. We will never reach a satisfactory answer that appeals to everyone. Be it lens or lens, when I read it on a photography forum I know what the poster means.

Before I became a member of any web forums I was unaware of just how terrible my spelling and grammar was. It was after being 'called out' on a certain forum about it that I realised.

That thread did a couple of things for me. Firstly it detroyed my confidence in posting, making me think people were just getting irate verytime they saw a post of mine. Secondly it gave me a reason to try harder to put it right.

I could have retaken my GCSE English, and in fact I did sign up for the course at my local college. Unfortuantly it was around about the time my Agoraphobia started to kick in and I only managed 2 lessons. So I am now (and have been for a few years) learning as I go with the help of the Google Toolbar spell checker. I also do a google now and again to try and brush up on my grammar if I think it's slipping.

It's working. I know this because when I first started using it there were so many spelling mistakes, it took longer to click all the highlighted words that apeared after clicking the spell checker button, than it did to actually type out the post in the first place. But now I'm not so bad with my spelling, and the constant correction of certain words has finally begun to drum it into me. My grammar still leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm getting there I hope :)

Anyone reading this that feels paranoid, please have a look at the Google Toolbar if you don't have it already. Not to satisfy those with a lack of tolerance, but for yourself.

P.S I don't like these threads cropping up, simply because it breeds intolerance. It never used to bother me how people spell certain words. But after reading these kinds of threads so much over the years, I have noticed I am also starting to let it grind on me. :shake:.

What's wrong with you lot? The correct spelling is g-l-a-s-s

:D

A bloke called Len had a lens. It was Len's lens. And his father, whom he was named after, also had a lens, they were Lens' lenses. Some might say the Lens's lenses, but you can't be sure.

The lenses were Cannon mount, or should that be the len's mount was Canon, or the lens' mount was Canon, or the lens's mounts were Canon. Except that I think Len's dad, Len, had a Nikon.

I have a friend called Len... :D Now I just need to find someone called Jim who owns a Gym, so he can call it "Jim's Gym"!

Lens or the plural lenses is correct, not lens. Another pet hate is spelling epson (the printer manufacturer) as epsom, but I believe that's usually caused by spelling checkers.

No. It's caused by people accepting the spell checker's suggestion without thinking.

Whilst we're in rant mode, it's try to do something, not try and do something.

Steve.

I beg your pardon.

We can easily find a satisfactory answer, lens is right lens is wrong.

end of story.

there is something deeply warming about that fact that some people are more anal than me.

we are a relaxed forum, no-one will be flogged for spelling it wrong by the staff, even though technically both are correct.
