Yes
Call me a lose canon - but there's something about bad speling that definately makes me want too scream...

Its 100% Lens, however I sometimes use lens without thinking, as do others.

Lenses
Lens

But not lens. Spell checker comes up saying it is wrong.

Its loose not lose & your spelling not speling is definately way too dodgy

or did you meen to speal it rong ;)

Me too slow also :-)

Er, I do believe the OP deliberately spelled those words wrong ;) Durrrrr :p

BTW It's both.

Lens is the commonly accepted variation of the word. However lens is still acceptable.
Not really the end of the world though is it ;)

Nope. It's both.

Nope - it's not. I checked before posting.

Lens is pronounced as in "tens".

lens is pronounced as in "tense".

Wilkepedia does state "The variant spelling lens is sometimes seen. While it is listed as an alternative spelling in some dictionaries, most mainstream dictionaries do not list it as acceptable. " but adds "citation needed" and also "The obsolescent spelling lens is sometimes seen, but Merriam-Webster's medical dictionary is the only major dictionary that considers this to be correct".

So there. It's in Wilkepedia so must be true. :D

almost as ironic as using Wikipedia as evidence of anything. Wiki is flawed by its very nature, its almost a search engine of ideas, so for example if i wanted to write an essay about William Hogarth i could approach Wiki for ideas of where to go next, but it is NOT fact and therefore inheritely flawed, futher research is vital to confirm anything from Wiki

It also gets to me when I read it.

I started a thread a while back: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=144026&highlight=lens+lens

Still about 60% of the time I see someone start a thread about a lens, the will spell it lens.

He who uses an American dictionary to answer an English spelling question deserves his gear to be confiscated for a few hours :gag:

Actually I do worry about spelling these days, possibly due to the fact I was so bad at it while at school. The correct answer is Lens, with the plural being lenses. lens is a US spelling.

What really does worry me is that the online versions of established English dictionaries are giving US spellings as being correct. A recent one that shocked me was the online version of the OED gave Sheeps as a plural to Sheep. My printed version (non-concise) most certainly does not.

Aberal seriously you should get a life, posters like you are far to eager to slag peoples spelling and grammer, who do to you think you are, definatly a trouble maker in my mind.

Far to much of this silly sniping and callous nit picking goes on on this and many other forums. What make you think that you are so perfect, have you a degree in the english language do you own the Oxford concise dictionary or Wickepedia or what. You are as far as I can see out to cause trouble now go away and so what if you get annoyed of how word is spelt.

Rant over
Dave

A bloke called Len had a lens. It was Len's lens. And his father, whom he was named after, also had a lens, they were Lens' lenses. Some might say the Lens's lenses, but you can't be sure.

The lenses were Cannon mount, or should that be the len's mount was Canon, or the lens' mount was Canon, or the lens's mounts were Canon. Except that I think Len's dad, Len, had a Nikon.

Iv got an idea.. all those people that get annoyed about bad spelling should go to a forum all about it.. this is a photography forum! not a plaform to slag off those that have a problem with spelling..

Do some research, i bet you find at least ONE person in history that is better than you that had such a problem.. in fact i bet there are LOADS!!!

Looser.. ;)

Over here, they say "Linse" for certain types of lens, which also means 'lentil' in German - potentially very confusing :D!

Maybe that's why the photographic type of lens is referred to as an "Objektiv". That said, there aren't many places where you could buy a 50mm lentil, so I guess that everyone knows how to tell the difference :D.

It really isn`t important.......

Nah, sorry Old Bean (or Lentil), it's your opinion of what's important that isn't important ;)

I really don`t think that any spelling error on any internet forum is worthy of derision. This particular error seems to annoy a few on this fine forum,in the grand scheme of things,in my opinion of course...;).......it isn`t of great national importance.

You must admit though, there will be a lot of people who will go through life mistakenly thinking that they are using the correct spelling of this word, even though they are not, unless some people challenge it now and again .

Does that matter? I think it does - if you Google "Nikon 50mm lens", because you want to buy one for instance, you'll still find a lot of results but will miss the majority of the information that you're after :|. For this reason, I think that cases like this do matter, more than the kind of silly mistakes that we all make like; "teh", "definately", "*******s" ;) etc.

Just my $0.02

I think we should all jusy use "lenze",alleviates all problems and we would have invented a new word........:D

The lens/lens mis-spelling isnt too bad, yes lens is wrong, however its nowhere near as bad as the " I brought a new lens this week "

If I could trouble you for a moment, dear Sir. But your use of the incorrect apostrophe in "don't" and "isn't" and the absence of a space following a comma and two spaces following a full stop is, quite frankly, DRIVING ME UP THE ******* WALL.

;)

Forgive me, I must try to do betterer...( ;) )in future............
