iTunes Downloads - HD or SD?

There are options for HD or Standard Def when you download films or TV from the iTunes store - is there a difference as iPad and iPhone are not HD devices are they? So why download HD (unless its to view it on iPad 3 or 4)??

From what I understand the sd option is lower quality than dvd. I believe you also get the sd version when you download the hd version?

Personally I'd always get the hd versions, chances are they'll be higher framerate/bitrate and less blocky.
