I've a gaping hole between 50mm and 100mm - help me fill it (on a budget)

So after culling my EF-S I'm left with the following.

Canon 1D3
Canon 40D
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L
Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L

It doesn't take a genius to see that I'm missing a 'walkabout' lens.

What would you advise to fill the gap ?

I've loved and passed on 24-105L and 28-70L as I just don't use them for anything other than snaps.

I guess I'm happy to budget on the walkabout range.

Thanks Matthew - I may go back to that but I'm keen to know if there is a decent lens to be had for less as it will fall into the snappy range for me.
 
Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM :thumbs:

Sharp, fast, compact, well built and great reviews. Much more than a 50 and not as big and heavy as a 100 :shrug:
 
Canon 28-105. It's an old design but quite good optically and much smaller than the 24-105. Or you could deliberately restrict yourself to the 50 and learn to love it :)

Tempting - but I'm leaning towards a zoom for a walkabout.

The old Canon 28-105 was highly regarded in film days, I had one on the EOS 30 and loved it. Sharp and fast AF, and dirt cheap nowadays I'd bet.
If you want a faster lens though, one of the 3rd part 24-70s would be perfect.
