Yes
I am even as I type this uploading shots to my newly opened Flickr account.

What do I do now? Whats it for? How can it help me?

Lots of vague questions I know but I've never been one for reading instructions (lazy g*t) and I'm really not sure what the protocol is. I've seen people linking images from there to here and discussion about URL(?) etc.

So any help or info gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Put your flickr everywhere and hope someone like Getty hires you?

See I don't even know what that means (sarcastic or not)

Andy, I just use mine as a photo hosting place - even though its so much more than that. You can put your photogaphs into other groups, people can search them - and will hopefully leave you some feedback on them also.
Make sure to "tag" your photographs with apporpriate words for that - and sit back and enjoy! :)

Dont forget, talk photography has a flickr group -be sure to post your images in there also!

From what I've seen, it's a place to get your ego massaged. Big groups of fake friends who spam each other and pour over every shot as 'the best ever!!11!.

Deleted mine after about a month.

Saying that, works for some people, and I know a few who've got work through people seeing their Flickr pages.

You forgot the wonderful "post-one-comment-on-fifty" groups where you can not only get a full ego massage but loads of these

so that everyone else knows just how desperate you are

There's a lot of ****, but do not knock it.

It's how I got my first (and now second too) mini break, and it's ********* useful for making contacts. So there's idiots? ignore them, and talk to the non idiots.

It takes a while til the traffic comes regularly, but add contacts, join and post in groups, and things happen.

I use it to host my pics and so my family / friends can see them. There are a lot of idiots on there but tbh most of the people who comment on my pics are from here. Although i have joined a few groups i dont really bother with them, the feedback on here is much more useful.

Cheers mate. I want my ego massaged (and anything else actually) :D. Nowt wrong with being told you're doing ok. However I won't take it too seriously unless people on here think I'm doing ok as well as I respect the opinions on this site greatly.

It's great to receive comment on your shots... really means a great deal to some of us. Also, it's nice to have an online gallery so that your best shots are ready to show to your friends, even if you're away from your own computer.

Plus, if you keep loads of photos there, and lose your originals, all is not lost..

I like Flickr and wonder why it receives so much criticism. There's are some really talented photographers showing their work and some inspirational images. I often have a wander through the Interestingness pages.

Flickr is a good resource to look at others photographs and styles of photography discuss their techniques and comment and critisise photography.

(Though many people also use it as a huge ego massage!)

What i really enjoy about flickr is the huge number of different photographers and styles represented on there. Whatever you shoot be it fine art, sports, nature. You can undoubtedly find a specific group in which there will be a load of other photographers (many of whom are pretty dam good) that share similar photographic interests.

I enjoy flickr as at times on this forum people can be (dare i say) a little bit narrow minded. (see the numerous street photography debates!). Flickr really has something for everyone with all styles represented.

Just my two cents!

In terms of using the site, start searching through the groups and find something your interested in. Look through for inspiration, ask questions on peoples photos, and others will comment on your pictures. Hopefully offering advice and criticism.

Cheers for all the responses folks.

On a more specific note, I see people saying that they link back to TP from Flickr and vice versa. What does this mean and how do I do it? Also how do I put a link to my account on here when I post?
I'm sorry for all the daft questions but although I've used a computer at work since Adam was a lad I have no idea about t'internet etc.

I use it so my dad and my friends who live far away can see my stuff and share photos.
Also, I have made quite a few friends on Flickr who are interested in the same kind of photography and we meet up to do stuff, whereas I would not have known them otherwise.

same here atleast 5 of my friend and family check my flickr page daily for new stuff makes a nice talking point aswell .Ive also met other local togs through flickr which is great also :D.

Yes there are people who think they're gods gift if thier photo has been in explore or have 50 comments with gifs on it.Like its been said though I mostly ignore those people.

Flickr rocks, I use it every day for several different reasons. One, I am teaching a local night class in digital photography and have created a group page where the class members post images and use the forums to discuss various topics. Two, I post family photos of the kids so my mum and dad can check them out. Three, I use it to post my personal work and enjoy feedback from other photographers. All in all, a very interesting site.

I started using Flickr the other week and am slowly getting into it.

My tips woudl be :

1. Get yourself into some groups (whatever you are into, there will be a group)
2. Use the Flicktr Uploader
3. Tag your images
5. commment on others photos (not jsut for the sake opf commenting, amke it useful)
4. Put loads of images in there

That way you will get laot more out of the site other than jsut using it as a photo dump.

There are some golden rules;
REPLY. Always, because karma is important.
Be polite, but feel criticise if need be.
Build contacts.

I also have a nice bank of favourites, that I use as much for inspiration as anything.

I use flickr purely for sharing images with friends/family. I don't get into the whole comments thing. I use the groups from time to time but as a whole I probably don't use flickr to it's full potential. I do have a pro account but that was purely to allow me to upload as many images as I wanted as at the time I didn't have any web space of my own.

This kind of thing annoys me about flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/2719073627/in/set-72157607258638031/

"philosophical", "Beauty in nothingness. Lovely colors and bokeh.", "Very special -- emotionally upbeat -- great stuff!"

It's it really? There's a few people on flickr who appear to have quite the fan base.

I use flickr - made quite a few print sales off the back of it. As the number of motorsport events I attend grows, it's the ideal place to host them (all tagged etc). Post your images to the appropriate groups as well - maximise your coverage!

Cheers guys and gals. I've taken your advice and started to insinuate myself into some groups (starting with the TP one obviously). Still not sure about this reciprocal linking thing but I'll figure it out eventually.

Hello all,

I'm new to this site and been reading this tread with interest.

I already have a flickr account and have just added myself to the flickr TP group. Now I have been trying to add my flickr gallery link as a signature in my TP account here.

I've made the link in word and it works fine and takes me to my flickr page. But when I try to put it in my signature here, it fails to work.

Anyone know how to do this so i can upload link here I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Hi John. If you go to Edit Signature in your options and just press the "Insert Link" button at the top and in the box that pops up, insert the URL of your Flickr account homepage.

Or if you want to customeise it so it says something like "John's Flickr Page" you could do something like this:

PHP:
My Flickr Photos

Hi bigloader,

Thats the route i took.

After putting my flicker url in word I then changed it so it read "myflickr" . I then clicked on this in the word document and it took me to my flicker gallery.

Then I copy and pasted like you suggeted into the drop down box and tried it and the web page dosn't open. just get error web page. Like the one you get when your homwpage won't load.

OR did you mean use the red text you entered in howto do example?
regards,
john

Hi John, I am not sure I understand what you did. You dont need to use Word. Try doing this instead. Open up "Edit Signature" from the Quick Links at the top of this page, then type in the box so it looks like the following, changing the details for your own:

Untitled.jpg

Hope this helps, sorry I aint good at explaining stuff very well;)

Its just the stuff they use in theatrical and stage lighting, like a plastic type film that goes over the light. I got a free swatch book of samples and used it on the torch :)
