as the title says, ive got a 55-250mm i got it about a month after i bought my camera and ive had it a year and id like to upgrade it to something else. I was thinking of 2 options:

i can either go for a sigma 135-400 4.5-5.6 but id rather not go sigma in all honesty... id be keeping the 55-250 with that one too. it is only going to cost around £200 but it means carrying a lot extra around.

or my second option would be to get rid of the 55-250 and buy a 70-200 f/4 (non IS) and then later on buy a 1.4x teleconverter. it would cost more but i could share my b+w cpl between lenses.

its also got to fit in my crumpler 7 million dollar home that should be here aaaaanytime... and theres already a 10-22mm and 450d with a 17-85mm attatched with a few extras

Thanks for your help :)

Another upgrade path is the 70-300 IS (not to be confused with the 75-300) or the 100-400L - that's a big jump though. Depends how much reach you want.

well, im wanting it to get into some motorsports photography, specifically moto gp in june but id like to get some practice in first with some practice/testings sessions and bsb races etc. I dont know if anyone is the same but the idea of having the L is a big factor in me wanting that lens... sad? i dont know haha

but the 100-400 is too much, im thinking of spending around £400 now, so definately one from ebay too, then later on get the 1.4x

For £400, I would say 70-300 IS is your best bet, though you'll probably be short of reach for bikes unless you can get trackside.

Long lens photography is difficult and expensive, no way around that. You will lose AF if you go higher than f/5.6 with an extender.

If you want me to be honest, a 200mm or 300mm lens won't cut the mustard at Silverstone for the MotoGP. The reason, safety barriers, fencing and the distance you'll be from the action, you'll need 400mm plus to get anything worth while. Unfortunately £200 ain't going to get you close to a usable lens for motorsport at most of the main race tracks even 2nd hand. The sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 is probably the bottom of the pile to start with but thats £600 new (£500 2nd hand), the sigma 135-400mm ain't a great lens.

ok then, ill forget the 135-400, i think ill get the 70-200 for now as you can use extenders, would i be able to use extension tubes at the same time? for a bit of macro without having to buy a macro lens and maybe rent a bigger lens for moto gp when it gets here, any reccomendations for what to rent? or where from?

You can use extension tudes on the 70-200mm, just remember that the original lens as has a minimum focal distance of 120 cm's so although you'll be able to increase the magnification remember your working distance.

It depends how much $$$ you have, and would recommend going on the practice or qualiifying days to get photo's, forget it for the race day unless you get there very early to get a spot. As for a lens I use primes, but you'll need 300mm (+ TC) or 400mm (plus) for Silverstone, perhaps something goochie like the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 which will take a TC and still autofocus on a cropped sensor camera.

Sigma 120-400mm OS is a lovely lens and you might find a 2nd hand one for around £400 or so (£546 new from One Stop Digital)
I had the 135-400 and I would not recommend it.

I use Kenko tubes on a 70-200L 4 IS, and for what I do, I actually prefer it to the Canon 100 macro I had previously. Let me explain that though!

For a start it's a very sharp lens and I like the ability to zoom and change both the magnification and working distance, and the IS helps a bit. But I don't shoot critical flat subjects like stamps or coins that demand a perfectly flat field, zero distortion and very fine edge sharpness.

I'm much more of a flowers and butterfiles and general stuff kind of guy, where most of the image is way out of focus anyway, and a bit of flexibility in working is really helpful. And for that kind of stuff, a simple macro close-up attachment like a Raynox DCR-250 is embarrasingly good for a mere £40. Check out this lot  http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/

Ringflash is good
