Don't ask... but I've managed to b****r my monitor's colour and can't seem to get it back to anything half decent. I thought I'd managed it, but have just uploaded a shot to Flickr and the colour's have all gone screwy with loads more magenta/red.

Before I chuck the thing out of the window, I seem to remember something about discrepencies in colour between photoshop and firefox?

Or has anyone got any other ideas?

Link to the image?

2 ways of screwing colours up. 1 is hardware based, reset your monitor to factory settings and see if that helps. 2nd is colour profiles but I know little about that.

as far as i can remember firefox displays colours correctly and the other browsers don't

are you working in/exporting in srgb?

It's hard to explain, but the colours are a lot more subdued in photoshop CS4 and that tungsten orange is nowhere near as strong. Plus the image is lighter in CS4.

Invest in a better monitor and calibration device? You can pick up a dell uw2209 for under 200. Bloody brilliant at that price.

I was looking at em on FLeBay, but then read that they aren't too good unless you work in a really bright environment. And I'm hoping I can solve the problem without expense as I need other things (like a printer).

That's nonsense. They're bloody great - and I edit in near darkness.

Shhh, I'd convinced myself I could save some money. :p

Right... gotta go to work in a min... will pick this up tonite and hopefully I can get it solved without bidding on eBay! :D

It's not that easy to tell on the image posted as evening light can be funny colours anyway.
One way if you have no callibration is to open photoshop and try and ajust the monitor so the grey background looks grey to your eye, not the best way I'll admit, but better than b****r all.

Doesn't actually look too bad to me, maybe a little over saturated. I often find my night shots to have too much magenta in them, usually helps to turn the white balance down a bit more.

Can you remember what you were doing when every thing went screwy.

Have a look at the colour preferences in Photoshop, and see what you have the monitor profile set too. It could be that this has changes and is causing the problem.

Never mind what it looks like on your monitor, it's going to look different on everybody elses anyway. As long as you can detrmine what your result is for when you want to print I guess it would be OK

I too work in a low ambient light setup. no problems with my 2209WA either.

Hmm, a little update...

The image looks how I expected when viewing it at work. And the image in Firefox on Flickr matches the version I look at in Photoshop on the same machine.

So the issue seems to be that on my home Mac there is a colour mismatch between firefrox/flickr and photoshop.

Grrrrr!

Aha!

Managed to get photoshop matching Flickr again!

If I set Photoshop to view > proof colors > ticked, then set view > proof setup > monitor rgb, then all is well :)

We'll move onto getting the whole thing to match a printout later. At least PS now matches Flickr I am safe uploading images again :)
