I'm heading to Japan soon. Was wondering if anyone could tell me whether a standard plug converter will be fine for charging camera batteries, AA batteries and my Macbook Pro? Or do I need to get something a bit more specialist?

Japan is nominally 100V supply but variously 50Hz or 60Hz depending on where you are. Uses standard US connectors throughout though. So if your kit is rated to work at 110V, it should work in Japan with only a straightforward adaptor. If not you'll need a step-up transformer (to turn the 110V into 220V...) and an adaptor. These are both expensive and heavy - probably more so than replacement chargers...

http://users.telenet.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm is a reliable source for this type of advice.

Thanks - that's helpful. Now just need to get hold of a 2-pin adapter for my Macbook Pro and a 3-pin to 2-pin adapter for general use.
