I'm thinking of braving Ebay to buy a Canon 60D, is there any differences between the Chinese/Japanese Models and the UK model?
 
Oh dear! Think carefully about buying 'grey' imports - warranty issues, import duty. There may be some reliable dealers, but not all are on Fleabay. personally, I wouldn't risk that amount of money buying from the far east.

I live in HK and there is nothing wrong with buying from the East i have save more money here on a Canon camera then in London prices.;)

I wouldn't use ebay mate, all the dslr Canon Cameras are made in Japan but Canon is moving to Thailand, I have a 60D myself and there is no differents in camera settings. and China don't make the dslr cameras.

That's rather the point isn't it. You don't have to contend with all the issues that Carol quite rightly mentioned.
 
Cheers for the info, the one I am looking at is from a london dealer but it's a Japanese import so not worries about the import duty, but there is still the issue of warrenty. But it's over £300 cheaper than the high street dealer I spoke to the other day!

I suppose my next question is; is there any issues with faulty 60Ds? I'm just trying to weigh up the risks.

Why don't you talk to the London dealer over the warrenty first then make up your mind i got my 60D when it first came out last years and i saved £365. then, but i can only use my one year warrenty in HK. to your other question i found no issues with faulty 60Ds here. it must be the people on ebay.

I hope you can get a good deal and the warrenty it's much cheaper to buy in the east then in the UK

Are you sure it's £300? Even Jessops are selling it at £780 which would make your camera's price around £450-480, placing it firmly in the second hand price/ v dodgy market.

WoW £780 in Jessops was you joking? that's way over price but is that with a 18-135 or just body i am so happy i buy it here.:)
 
I've brought 2 bodies off ebay and never had a problem with either of them. My 550D was brought a year ago for christmas last year so is about out of warranty now anyway, but my 7D was brought from a reputable ebay seller (99.8% from 178000 feedback) with a seller guarantee. If it goes wrong and it has to go to the US for repair then so be it, it may take a while longer but you still get the job done.
I've got 3 bodies and about 7 lenses, all Canon, and so far I've never had a problem with any of it. None has needed servicing yet, but if it becomes necessary after the warranty then I will happily pay for it to be done.

With the basic lens I was looking at it is £940 in Jessops and £630(HK) or £660(UK) on fleebay! Massive difference!
 
There's a massive difference for a reason:

a) You can virtually guarantee that any camera advertised at that low a price is breaking import regulations if and it's a huge if it is even shipped from within the UK.

b) You stand a much greater chance of being scammed

c) Warranty repair will be a nightmare if you need it

As for UK prices, you ought to shop around a bit better:

that does sound to cheap, most big uk stores are selling for around £750, amazon at £700
and this is the cheapest i can find which is an import but you will have noprobs with anywarranty issues as they only use authorised nikon and canon services centers.

HDEW are a UK dealer, but sell grey imports. There are some advantages (chiefly cost) and disadvantages to buying grey imports. They are incredibly well documented on these fora, it's a discussion that people have every week, and search the Shopping, Suppliers and Bargains forum if you aren't entirely sure if a retailer sells UK stock or grey stock.

It's a decision that you have to make, balancing those various benefits and problems.

HDEW have been great with me. I had to send back a D700 due to a fault in the first few weeks and they sent out a brand new replacement body within 24 hours with 0 shots taken, totally brand new. Mine was at 2500 by then. It's true that warranties on bodies are effectively provided by HDEW rather than the manufacturer, although it's a three-year warranty.

AFAIK lenses come with a worldwide warranty so are covered wherever you buy them.

I saved a lot of money buying from HDEW rather than the high street or elsewhere online and have no regrets. And I have a longer warranty than standard!

I understand it does take a leap if faith buying from an importer but it's worked for me so far. And because they are a UK based business they have to comply with consumer law.

this is true hdew offer a 3 year warrenty but on some bodys its free and other you get a standard year, but can buy 3 years for £99 and as said its only bodys that dont have world wide warrety, where as lenses do.
 
I agree with Marstham. I bought my 60D from HDEW cameras, excellent service and the 3 year service contract was free.:thumbs:
 
If you buy a made in japan camera and it was made for the japanese market, don't be to surprised when you find out all menus and manuals are in japanese only. No problem from most reputable HK sellers but it happens. Better as some point out to find a UK dealer.
 
Just got my 5DMkII from Hdewcameras, very helpful, reliable and a great price.
 
I've used Digital Rev,Simply Electronics and HDew numerous times and never had any problems.Most of these companies offer a warranty through themselves rather than Canon and give you a UK address to return faulty items to.Kerso is also worth checking out.His items are US imports.

I've just received 2 new lenses from Panamoz and they have been supurb.3 day delivery from HK,all duties paid and awesome prices.You can also knock another 5% off their web site prices if you pay via BT.

Someone will always have an horror story for every supplier whether UK or foreign.
