I cannot for the life of me get this to flash off of the camera.

I want to do a bit of macro and don't want to use P mode as it uses the lowest aperture.

Anybody know how?

Do you mean you want to use it off-camera?If so it needs to either be on. TTL cable or in Slave mode and triggered by your camera's onboard flash.
